Biltmore's conservatory. What an indulgence it was for me to be able to take my time and just snap, snap, snap. Maybe these little souvenirs will hold you until you get the chance to see it yourself one day. This is likely enough inspiration for me to draw pictures of flowers for at least a decade. Sigh.
Thanks for the workshop sellout that happened pretty lickitysplit today. I am so honored that there is that interest out there, and I promise to be a good hostess to those of you joining. I simply cannot wait. If you missed this one, let me know, and I'll add you to an interest/wait list for the future.

Gotye (Wally De Backer) went to Primary school with my little sister.
ReplyDelete6 years ago, when one of his singles had just been voted in at #6 on the annual Australia Day "Hottest 100", he still took the time to send my sister a message of support as she went in for life saving surgery on a brain tumor - he seems to be a genuinely good person.
Everyone here in Melbourne is thrilled with his success, and his album "Making Mirrors" is a favourite in our house.
Your floral photographs are beautiful - especially the orchid.
Dredged in flowers!
ReplyDeleteLove it.
That song, and the video... so haunting, infectious.
Oh... how nice to read Claire's remarks about Gotye, and Claire, I hope your sister has regained her good health.
ReplyDeleteOooooo pretty, pretty flowers. That last one- with the stripey petals is just breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen this version? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9NF2edxy-M
We went through a few weeks of this a few weeks ago- my husband and I shouting/singing the lyrics at each other- "...that I USED to know!" LOL. This too shall pass ( :
Beautiful pics!! Love the Biltmore. And I KNEW that you'd be spotlighting that video. It's downright addictive. Hint: Add Goyte as a Pandora station while you're working. It's fantastic.
ReplyDeleteClaire- wow!
ReplyDeleteNatalie- I know!
JennX- are you saying you're a few weeks cooler than me?
Lori-made the station yesterday
Everyone- tofu scramble is almost done!
;-P

So gorgeous and seems just right for the soul after the winter months. I used to go to the Cheekwood estate to walk the grounds, nature trails, and through the greenhouses when I lived in Nashville. A great way to escape.
ReplyDeleteMake a note to see it decorated for Christmas. Love the Biltmore. I want to live on the back porch close to the library. But the conservatory would work too!
ReplyDeleteLove your pics.
Amazing flowers! And a good reminder that I live way too close to Biltmore to let so much time pass between visits. And no, you are not the only one addicted to that song. Did you see them on SNL last weekend? Awesome!
ReplyDeleteincredible colors....
ReplyDeleteok, you just contaminated me with this music.....
Makes me want to take that hour and a half drive to Biltmore. Apparently spring is THE season. Also love that song and have wondered about the whole album. You know you've made it when Glee covers your song. Haha.
ReplyDeleteYour flower photos are so pretty. At first I thought it was your garden and I was feeling inadequate about our weed filled yard...
ReplyDeleteI was also going to point out same video as Jenn X, I must be so cool because we were watching that clip repeatedly a few months ago! :-) Gotye is awesome, I saw him live a number of years ago at The Metro in Sydney, just after his first album came out. So glad he's getting the exposure.
dxx
Lovely-ness. You just made my day with those images. No really. Made my day. : )
ReplyDeleteSo surprised that no one mentioned the prisms in the video...... ;). soooo love the flowers. thanks so much for the indulgence.
ReplyDeleteI simply cannot wait too!! I haven't been this excited since flying to Arizona to make strawberry pincushions with Heather :)
ReplyDeletewhat is with that video?! It's amazing- thank you for the link. And I agree, I can't get sick of that song, either. When it comes on the radio my 5 year old says "Mom, your song is on". hee hee.
ReplyDeletetofu scramble, yes, I agree, that I can get sick of :)
So funny you say that about Gotye, I'm completely addicted, can't stop listening and watching the video clip...The lyrics, the voices, the colours OMG! everything!
ReplyDeleteHappy for you that the workshop sold out, Sad for me coz I so wanted to come :( Was trying to figure out how I could make such a transatlantic trip and then pouf, sold out just like that.
Good luck with it all, I'm sure it will be a blast for you and your guest
xxx

Thanks for sharing your inspiration with us! I'm loving the song and the flowers - I wish we would get some warm weather soon so I would have flowers of my own to look at!
ReplyDeleteWhen I clicked on the link I just knew it was going to be that song. Isn't it briliant - we had it on loop here for days. And no, never got sick of it!
ReplyDeleteThe woman is from the same small city in NZ as my husband was born :)
Check out 'Hearts a Mess' by Gotye as well... The film clips is interesting too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tofu scramble link. Now that I can't eat eggs, breakfast is a challenge. Have you seen the old movie Where the Heart is with Uma Thurman... I love the trompe l'oeil painting on the body.
ReplyDeleteWant help. Look at the Weston Price diet. Tofu or any soy for that matter is bad for you. It interferes with thyroid function and growth and reproduction in young. Someone who was hooked on tofu introduced me to Weston Price and now we are both off the stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in doing a workshop with you Anna Maria! I would have signed up for this one but already doing a big workshop in October with Gwen Marston and Sue Spargo in Sister, Oregon!
ReplyDeleteReally lovely photos of all beautiful flowers ~ thanks for sharing.
And, that tofu scramble sounds so yummy! I'm Vegan and it's always nice to find a good recipe!
haha, Anon.- not hooked on tofu! thanks :) AM
ReplyDeleteBeautiful beautiful flowers, your photography is amazing. Right now in my part of the world (Southern Oregon) it's raining buckets - after being nearly 90 degrees last week, whew. And the video - wow, I've never heard of this artist but that's the most fascinating and beautiful work of art I've seen in a long time . . . thanks for sharing. Oh, and I've gone back to watch it 4 times in the last 20 minutes . . .
ReplyDeleteWe look forward to our first trip to Nashville this Fall!!!
ReplyDeleteI'll pass on tofu scramble, but maybe you could charm Gotye to join us in October. :-)
ReplyDeleteIsn't the Biltmore gorgeous? Of course Asheville ain't so bad either. Both are favs of the NC girl!
ReplyDeleteOMG I am laughing so hard because I just got done thinking the same thing about the same song when I heard it AGAIN on the radio! I had not seen the video thanks for that now I will be humming this song all night with the video playing over and over in my brain!!
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand at first I thought these flowers were from your garden and was thinking is there anything Anna Maria cannot do!!
Elise
Oh, LOVE Gotye! BOTH videos are great! I started to sing it and my 12 and 13 year olds said, "Wow, Mom -- you know that one?" I'm not THAT uncool, ya know! Jealous, TOP STITCH, jealous! I wanna go, too!
ReplyDeleteAnna Maria, really love reading your blog. Just thinking - you are into Australian music - and you are able to do fantastic workshops which I, for one, would love to be a part of. How about a trip to Australia to do a needleworks workshop??!! I reckon you could fill several in the blink of an eye. Just a thought....
ReplyDeleteOh, I wish I had known about the workshop sooner! Please add me to the wait list for a future workshop.

He sounds SO much like Sting to me! (In this song, anyway)
ReplyDeletehave you seen this cover:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9NF2edxy-M
it's kind of crazy. six people on one guitar.
Oh dear, I thought i was recovered from seeing this video on Cathy Zielske's blog, but now I am re-obsessed. It's a genius video and an awesome song. My husband is starting to wonder about my crush on Gotye, however... Maybe if I make him tofu scramble, I can reaffirm my love for him?
ReplyDeleteGoyte - me too!
ReplyDeleteDitto on the song; it's my ringtone. The best cover is here
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUxLK1misbw
Love Ingrid, go see her perform if you can.
...when you get weary of the original, if ever.
Yes, yes I am.
ReplyDelete(can I say it's b/c I'm Canadian and that band is from 'round these parts?)
so pretty! biltmore is amazing. and this is a ridiculously awesome(!) video and cover of the gotye song: http://youtu.be/d9NF2edxy-M
ReplyDeleteit's 5 folks playing 1 guitar. ya seen it?!

ReplyDeleteI know this is a little off topic, but Daisy Janie (daisyjanie.typepad.com/daisyjanie) is doing a series on Organic Clothing. I know I may be preaching to the choir but she just put up a video that you will want to see (it is very short).
ReplyDeleteYou can get there throught her blog or my profile link.
THanks,
If this is not the place to post, Anna Maria please move or save it to a more appropriate post.
Dear Anna and friends
ReplyDeleteLove Gotye/Kimbra? I love this version, performed by them live, even more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7aR-JUL8U0
I'm one of Anna's fans from the Southern Hemisphere. G/K performed at the Aria's (Australian Recording Industry Awards) last year. In this version, her part feels so much more emotional.
I hope that you enjoy it.
Caroline
i went through a little obsessional phase with that video at the end of january- clearly it hit scotland a little before the US. i was supposed to be revising at the time.
ReplyDeletehowever, I have listened to the song 3x today and played the video once! silly helen. but I should be working, again.
gorgeous photos. I don't mean for this to get totally of the topic of beautiful flowers, but non genetically modified tofu is perfectly fine. all those studies on human health and tofu are done on people who are still consuming dairy (full of hormones and why wouldn't it be, it's a hormonal food for a baby animal) and meat. I'd bet my annual salary that these "soy/tofu studies" are funded by the international dairy federation...
ReplyDeleteLove the song too - have you seen this version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnnDhumNLyg Brilliant. I could listen to either version for ages. Love the colours in this post y the way - I'm feeling very inspired by them in a very wet South of england! xx
ReplyDeleteNow I know where you get inspiration for all those cool fabrics you design. Hmm...maybe I should visit flower conservatory again in SF.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for this post. A combination of advice that I've heard before but always bears repeating; plus new tips that I really ought to consider
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about that song!! and, bonus...he's cute!
