I love little purchases that make my day cheerier. Go have a look, several of these are half priced while they last. Our house is rather bricky and traditional from the outside so this is like a fair warning on the front doorstep for what to expect inside. And out of all the online sale shopping lately, its only appropriate that this got here first. Now all those other boxes have a pretty resting spot. I know my UPS man must be so thrilled.
9 days till school starts back for 4 out of 5 kids here. Our public schools have gone to standard attire this year, which entails lots of black, white, khaki and navy. Juliana stop reading here. I am so glad we have uniforms. It will make life a little easier no doubt for a lot of people...and teachers. Juliana resume reading here. My genius daughter was quick to realize that no restrictions have been put on shoes, tights, knee-socks, earrings and hair color. More on that later. We bought 7 new pairs to share and some were only $1.99!! What a thrill, I tell ya.
In other hues, a recent visit to Jeff's Grandma landed this afghan in my living room. It was the first one she made. Jeff stop reading here. The living room is at the beginning stages of some furniture transitioning. I've had a lot of the same furniture for several years and have slipcovered most of it more than once. I just pitched a rug yesterday, finally deciding I'd prefer looking at a bare floor than a tattered Storehouse rug from 9 years ago. I have the replacement in mind. And if I'm keeping that couch it'll be slipcovered again, most likely with washable, bleach-able white and a new single seat cushion and single back cushion. Jeff resume reading here. I have no desire to blow big bucks on the living room currently so I'm feeling creative.
I've also been wanting to recover that ottoman. After observing the afghan in its new habitat, I was toying with the idea of cutting it into a cover for the ottoman as doodled out in the sketch above. Can't decide. We have sooooo many afghans. I don't think Grandma would mind a bit. I think it would be pretty cool, actually. Feel free to cast a vote. I am feeling undecided which happens about once every 8 years.

ReplyDeleteSounds like echos of myself! I recognize that mat out front on your steps! I am also looking at some fun little rug options and counting my pennies at the same time! I LOVE THE ONES AT ANTHROPOLOGIE (heading there on Saturday, don't tell hubby) and have a few in mind, as well! Great minds think alike! I think the covered ottoman idea is swell, just maybe take account that little feet with shoes on might snag it after time? I dunno....you could always put a good stiff cloth underneith! Go for it! I love the idea!
If you're not sure about cutting the afghans, how about using two of them, folded to "fit" the length and width of the ottoman and then place them across the ottoman in opposite directions? At least you could do that, look at it and live with it a few days to see how you like the look and usability of it before you cut them. By the way, when I'm gone, you can cut up whatever you want--that sure is better than leaving things holed up in a closet, never used!
ReplyDeleteThe striped ottoman rocks! I love the idea of a cushy crocheted foot rest. It reminds me of a cushion cover in Leigh Radford's book Alterknits. (maybe seeing an object with the same kind of cover would help)

Love the idea of the afgahn cover for your ottoman. I would back and stitch/baste each piece to a fabric backing first to prevent stretching and extra wear.
ReplyDeleteGreat shoes and very creative! Uniforms are wonderful for parents (and kids even though they don't know it yet) but terribly conforming to kids who are still trying to find their own nitch and style. Hope your daughter can wear all of these without a fuss.
Love the ideas! I think that the afghan slip cover sound very cool. I just got a spiffy new door mat too, doesn't it make you smile when you come up to your house:)

ReplyDeleteWould love to see that ottoman slip cover made! How would you cut up an afghan? I know you can do it though. I'm really curious. I think if you turn a regular afghan into a custom slip cover it will get many more oooos and ahhhs and you'll love it!

ReplyDeletemy oldest started last year at a school with a uniform, and like your kids who have been raised to think as individuals and express their creativity, this was a big issue until she realized all that could be done with accessories! she was voted best dressed last year - and the one who has given "uniform" a whole new meaning.
can't wait to see the 1st day of school pics.
oh, and go for it on the ottoman!
I guess the only one that gets a "butterflies in the tummy" feeling about cutting up the first afghan Grammy ever made.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I don't think I could. I guess I get all nostalgic about the thought of showing it to my own granddaughter (40 years from now) when I teach her to crochet. How many times in life will you be able to say "Feel this, look at the stitches. Do you know who made this? This is the first afghan your great-great-grandmother ever made... isn't it lovely?"
I like the afghan idea!! and I really like the salmon...very nice. I'm redoing my massage space and I'm rather at a loss with it. We'll see!
ReplyDeleteI love the afghan idea! If the grandmother doesn't mind, then at least the afghan could be displayed and admired all the time instead of relegated to a hall closet somewhere. If I had a surplus of afghans I would do the same thing. Alas, to cover an ottoman with an afghan I would have to crochet one myself.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shoe link - my nearest urban outfitters is over 200 miles away, so discovering the sale section of their website could prove to be very dangerous! I'm already in trouble to the tune of four pairs of shoes!
Why not use one of your other Afghans to cover the ottoman? One that doesn't have quite such a history to it...that way you get to have the funky house look but still have Grandma's first ever Afghan to pass on. Plus it's not a complete catastrophe if anything, um, goes wrong?

Save the afghan and buy one at the thrift store or use one of your other ones without the story and history. Actually just having the afghan over the ottoman looks nice and then you can pull it over your legs when they get chilly.
