Postcard from Nicolas

saved
While I am not especially good at chronicling photos or artwork into albums or folders of and for my family there are certain scraps and bits of things that I hang onto. Not for any certain reason other than they feel especially poignant. And I am most certainly not great at organizing them, but they just get tucked here and there. I was cleaning out my closet on Saturday (just typing that doesn't quite cover how much that actually required of me). In the process this little card floated on the air down from the very top. A handwritten index card from a 6yr old Nicolas. Translated from his lovely phonetic spelling it reads:

Whenever Juliana isn't here I will be there if you fall down.

Nicolas turned 14 yesterday. I am so happy to have this postcard from his inner heart, his child heart. He was and is a gorgeous boy. Such a treasure to watch the rest as it unfolds. (And in my mind I can still hear little-him whispering words out loud very carefully in order to spell his writings.)

Hope you had a good weekend- its so sunny here today. xoA

one of those "priceless" things like the television commercial only much much better because this is actually yours! :)

I have a piece of artwork from a then four year old son which reads (without correction) "Rosis or Red vilits or Blue But thers no Mom Better than you. Luve, Seth" A prized possession. Seth is 30 now.

And not to ruin the moment, but at the same time keepin' it ree-uhl, our saved note from our daughter that was sent down the staircase via an aging helium balloon:

"If you ever want to see your pussy again, please send M & M's."

As she held the family cat in her room, we died.

@ Jen - Oh my goodness that is too funny! I just spit my tea all over the monitor.

I think that's about the sweetest thing- especially knowing how much you do miss your oldest when she is gone.

Well, it wouldn't have been so bad if she weren't 14 at the time. (JK). ;)

Oh! that is so sweet Anna, it brings tears to my eyes! And I can definitely relate to that...one of my priceless possesions that I see on my fridge door everyday is a handwritten note from my son dated Aug 2001 --"Dear Mama and Papa Thank you for your bravery, Honesty and Kindness and thank you when you forgave me when I scremed at both of you". Then a drawing of him that says "I did it" and me saying "I forgave you". Puts a smile on my face everyday!...he's now 18.

That is so sweet, AM! Wow, this was a busy weekend with two birthdays! Did you plan that? Being pregnant with Layla taught me that I would never be able to handle being super pregnant during the hot months (June-October), and she was born in March. If I could plan it perfectly, I'd like to birth the rest of my children between December and April. lol.

Awwwww! My son is a real softie and is always writing me sweet notes. I've saved every one of them- they're just to precious to part with. I don't want to think about when he's 14 and no longer writes sweet notes and cuddles.

My cousin told me when I was pregnant with him that little boys love their mammas. VERY TRUE!

I've saved very similar notes from my boy, who's now 15. Makes my heart bust.

So very sweet.
I've got all the notes my son has ever written to me. I don't know why I started saving them, but it's a lot. When my Dad died, I found all the notes I had ever written to him, letters included. It was really touching to me that he had kept them. Such a nice memory, thanks for sharing Anna Maria.

I think what is poignant about this note is partly how Nicholas has noticed the supportive role his sister plays and has deduced that if she is not there, there will be a gap which he is offering to fill. I love the metaphorical and rather epic style of his phrasing. Sounds like a line from a song. Bless him! Liz x

I've been stashing away some of Aria's phonetic spelling. It's so dear listening to them sound things out.

Of course the note is a treasure!

I so love this. Not just the card but the sentiment. We teach our kids all that we can and hope for the best. Just this evening, my son who is away at school, texted his sister with 'I love you'...the next text said 'I thought you should know'...I cried.

Oh, that little note brought tears to my eyes. My oldest is 4 now and says some of the most heartwarming things in her honesty. Knowing that she will grow out of this precious stage breaks my heart because I love it so so much.
