Painting Party

So I'm a little proud of this, when you consider birthday cake situations I have suffered in the past. (But thankfully barely recovered from.) My sweet Eleni turns 8 today. Pffufff. The time. She do pass us by. Eleni has invited a pair of friends to come home on the bus with her today. And together with her sister we're going to have a painting party. It was Isabela's (secret) idea to make Eleni a paint palette cake. Genius. Thank you Isabela. Talk about an easy design to execute! I did get a little fancy with her name on the side of the cake, but I was staring down at a plate full of beautifully colorful paints, erhhh icing plops. I had to do something besides eat them. So I painted on the side with a butter knife. And with "painterly" as the theme, I allowed myself not to worry about perfection. One helpful tip: etching her name in the white frosting with a toothpick first. Anyway, I think now I need to buy pretzel rods and black licorice strings so that I can maybe fashion a paintbrush (dipped in a icing color of course).

Now that Eleni is 8, we also decided it was high time she begin her fabric designing career. She drew out the design with markers (I had no idea she actually wanted birthday fabric, but how sweet). We scanned it, I redrew it digitally, as close to her hand as possible, and we sent to it Spoonflower. Thanks Spoonfower. Anyway. After the girls do some painting today everyone is going to make their own personal homemade pizzas. So I am thinking I will whip up some little aprons out of the fabric for them, so they'll all have a party favor to keep and remember the fun.

Better get to it.
Please don't be impressed.
Eleni asked for her own fabric for her 7th birthday.
Yea.
And I ate the colorful icing plops too.
I am afraid to look at the color of my mouth right now.
Over and out.
And Happy Birthday to my beautiful girl.
xoxo,Anna

Happy Birthday Eleni! The cake looks fantastic; there's nothing like that icing sugar rush (leftover icing must be one of the worst temptations on earth). Love the birthday girl-designed Spoonflower fabric, might have to steal that thought. If I was really organised I could make pencil cases and party favour bags from personalised fabric. Great idea! (Chances of implementation are sadly slim).

I suspect you're rainbow colors, even when you haven't been hitting the icing plops! Happy Birthday, to your sweet artist.

I try not to be *overly* impressed, but you make that very difficult, Anna Maria. At the very least, you have impressed upon me that my own seven year old really does deserve a birthday party... even if it is two months overdue.

What a great idea! I didn't realize you could send drawings in to make your own fabirc- how wonderful! Hope you all have a blast and Happy Birthday to Eleni!

Happy Birthday Eleni! My sweet baby, oldest daughter, turned 22 on the 19th. Time sure does fly. It's a great time of year for a birthday though. I love that she wants to do what Mom does and that you have a way to make that dream come true for her. You are fabulous Anna Maria!

Eleni has a great cake. I love the way her name is written on it. The fabric she designed is wonderful, it's inspired to use it for aprons (no matter how long it took, the idea is brilliant). Happy birthday Eleni and excellent idea Isabela for the cake. what a clever family!

Oh how sweet is all of this- I just love the cake and the fabric- well shoot, I would probably pay for that in a shop- your daughters are all so talented just like their momma and that has just got to make your heart swell. My furry kids (2 labradoodles) turned 3 today too so it is celebrating all around. Their puppy cake isn't nearly as artistic as Eleni's but they don't mind as long as they get to eat it up! :)

Sounds like a ton of fun. I've never forgotten your post about making a hello kitty cake. That was hilarious.

A painting party sounds very nice. I'll run that idea by Liam!

Smiling at the spectrum that is Eleni's name on the cake. I totally would have done it the same way (and absent-mindedly checked to see if you did). So painterly and beautiful!

so fun! had to share that my daughter had a party like this when she turned 8 or 9. i made cupcakes and laid them out like they were the plops on a pallette- each a diff. color. the girl who got the blue one decided to cover her entire face with the icing- on purpose! crazy- next to my white couch! eek! :)

Such a great cake!! I love what you did with the name too. Baking a cake for a birthday stress me out too... but it's not a birthday with mama's cake in our house!! So I meditate and get to work...

I love the cake and the fabric. I think it would be fun to use some of the fabric to make a birthday tablecloth. It could be a center piece for all family birthdays. A border of LouLouthi Hugs and Kisses would be fun :-)

Happy Sewing!

Sounds like a great party idea. Who doesn't like painting and pizza? Oh yeah, and cake!

Be sure and post some pictures of her fabric design too!

Oh, I love the cake! It looks fantastic. And isn't perfectly reasonable for everyone to have their own fabric? It should be!

Eating too much icing is never too great afterwards, is it?
