It is likely just me, but today I feel like anything is a better thing with some hand stitching. I have been cross stitching for days now on a very exciting design, but all on black Aida cloth, which is a challenge on the peepers. I've spent a lot of time on my flickr groups the past few days looking through everything that was made over the past year with my fabrics. So. Much. Beauty. You guys are amazing. I looked through, too, lots of shots of things that I made- searching for my favorites- from market and then some. I just keep going back to this one. Its just a detail of my velveteen Bonne Nuit quilt, but I love it so very much. I really didn't have time to stop to notice it, hurried as I was before market preparations to get it done. I knew I enjoyed it but it was hardly a relaxed, easy going creation, it was all on fast forward, and lovely, but fast. Now, though, those earnest blue stitches, working their way around anything in their path, activating the space but not intruding, adding durability but also beauty, being just exactly what they are, nothing more. The coral zigzag stitches, following orders, falling in line. All the obedience and playfulness in their character leaves me a little speechless today. Its hard to explain, really. Its so small. But so perfect. I am glad I made them. Just exactly like that, inadvertent as they were.

Gosh, those pretty blue stitches make me pretty happy too.
Love the detail, I'm working hard on hand quilting a large throw size quilt made out of your flannel, I'm half way and loving that I didn't machine quilt it! But gosh it takes a long time :)

One suggestion to help your eyes on the black Aida- lightly tap a bit of white loose dressmaker's chalk on it. It helps to show the threads, and can be brushed off with a toothbrush when you're done. Test it first, and don't do too much, or it'll get rubbed in. I hope that saves your eyes so you can keep designing more happy fabrics. :)
This quilt is such a joy--the luxurious feel, the comforting hand stitches. Just a bit of heaven, in my opinion.

This post couldn't be better. And I completely agree. Everything is better with a little handstitching. With a little more "you" so to speak. I'm at the point where no day is quite complete and fulfilling without a little handstitching work. I'm addicted. I want more pictures like this. So lovely. So simple. So complete.

I love the lively and surprising stitching lines and your description of them. Now I want to do some bold tractor furrow stitching too. As always your colors are astounding.
Very beautiful indeed. I love the look of handstitched pieces. Black aida or linen is very hard to work on. A friend just turned me on to cross-stitching on 8 count with yarn and I did my first project. Love it! Reading glasses not required. :) Best wishes to you, Tammy

I have been seeing a lot of hand stitching being added to enhance the design on fabrics. I love it all. It just seems like the right thing to do. I have been thinking of making a pair of pants with it for my teenage daughter. I think your fabrics would make a great match for it. BTW loved the pics in the Studio magazine. Carolina
Ooh, I needed to see that. I have a quilt (the Loulouthi Tiles) that I'm handquilting and I need to go freehand in the large portrait blocks, but I've never done it before. Thanks for a bit of an idea =)

Did you hand stitch each square first and then assemble or stitch after it was assembled. I am making my first quilt and thinking of hand quilting - maybe just at the intersections. I imagine hand stitching a large quilt would be difficult because of shifting.

HI Anonymous! I stitch the whole top, through the batting and backing together (but usually before the binding). It helps to keep everything basted/pinned or both as you go and also helpful to start in the middle. No matter what though l I am continuously spreading and smoothing the material in my hands to keep the layers a smooth as possible.

You have been an inspiration to me this year...already! I recently was displaced from my home due to a fire on Dec 30th. I had a quilt top in process made with the Good Folks line. I have always loved looking at your hand stitching and set a goal this year to complete my quilt top by hand stitching. I set a goal to finish it before we get to move back to our home.
