Embroidery + Angst
I don't know why this is making me laugh so hard. Nicolas and I are working together on some needlework videos for the launch of the goods (just a few weeks hopefully), which I am over the moon, no, over the man in the moon excited about. Anyway, we are playing with an intro. I loved this yesterday. Today I woke up and watched it again and it just sounds so funny and drum-lesson-teenagery to me that I think its hysterical. Which might mean it needs some work. Or it might mean its just perfect. (Do you feel like someone is shooting at you?) Either way, he is a regular riot to work with.
3 cheers for 13 year old boys and working at home.

ReplyDeleteI like it! it's cute!
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm standing in front of a firing squad. Was that the idea ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think it sounds just like a sewing machine!
ReplyDeleteHahaha I love it, however I also drum a lot so I maybe a little biased! Cheering on for 13 year old boys helping their mums :)
ReplyDeleteMade me smile, love it!
ReplyDeleteI was waiting for smoke to come out of the needle like it was a smoking gun ;P
ReplyDeleteIt made me laugh... but had I not known there was a teenage-boy-helping-mom behind it, I think I might have found it a little shocking. A tad. Maybe. But still funny.
ReplyDeleteThe back-and-forth needle at the end struck me as... um... suggestive. Oh, dear. Don't know why my mind has slunk into the gutter.
ReplyDeleteSounds and stitches go so great together! Simply perfect. (And I don't feel like I'm getting shot at all).
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful that you made it together. :))
Think its FUN...but can you make it go faster?
ReplyDeletethe wild cards: wha? hahaha, the needle shake was my idea, errps!
ReplyDeletebmayer- we tried to make it go faster, still working on it :)
LOVE IT
ReplyDeleteHaha! I was thinking, "Isn't this about embroidery?" when I heard the sound. Then I saw the animation and I started to chuckle. My 6 year old BOY came over to see what was happening...of course! :)
ReplyDeleteHooray!
ReplyDeleteIt's spot on!
I am crafty by nature, but I have an abiding affection for machinery and anything that sounds like manufacturing. I am also smitten by families that work and play together, so this gets three cheers from me!
have to agree the needle going back and forth is suggestive, but then again I have a dirty mind.
ReplyDeleteit's a bit in your face and loud and not really in keeping with your style. I know your patterns are bright and fun, but it's just a little bang bang bang if you know what i mean?
x
sharnel- I do know what you mean! hahaha
ReplyDeleteIt cracks me up! I like it but it's a little...unexpected. I can see where you have mixed feelings. Thanks for sharing a smile!
ReplyDeletemaybe tones like you would hear from a wind chime timed with the stitch action would be better? That's something you might hear in a garden which goes with the theme of the line...
ReplyDeleteYay for working with the kids! I really like the graphics a lot. Maybe if you got it to sound like a sewing machine instead of a drum? I agree--a little bit like a firing squad. :-)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE it!!! I have been stuck at home for over a week with a sick 11 year old boy that is now feeling well enough to play "Call of Duty, Modern Warfare" and keeps calling me to come and watch. Believe me, I can tell the difference between gun fire and drums:(
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for your floss...you have no idea..
It never hurts to add some music in the background to set the right mood.....maybe over lap it with the drum beat?
ReplyDeleteMaybe a softer sound..,?
ReplyDeleteOk...I've watched it a couple of times now, it makes me laugh every time! :) It's just so unexpected!
ReplyDeleteI agree with what some others have said, it is a little loud and "in your face" although I do love how the sound matches up with each stitch!
It made me laugh! How fun! Just perfect!
ReplyDeleteI'm so laughing right now - but I agree with Sharnelle, its great but not really your style.
ReplyDeleteIt's cute...cuter still when you know there's a 13 year old boy behind it!
ReplyDeleteBut...maybe a little firing squad-ish...?
Oh the fun that goes on in your house and studio! This made me laugh.
ReplyDeleteYou could have birds chirping--and because your name is on it, I am going to check it out.
ReplyDeleteI was a bit jolted! But I trust you to make the best decision on this one! I never doubt your judgement! I can't wait to get some of the needlework items!
ReplyDeleteit made me laugh too, its cute and quirky, and I love the fact that you have made it with a family member, making it even more personal and special. Well done!
ReplyDeletewell, my 11 month old danced to it ...with a big smile : )
ReplyDeleteCute, fun, not in the slightest suggestive. Tone down the volume of the drum, soften it up a bit is all. It is how I imagine you embroidering, you are so good at it.
ReplyDeleteOh, it's cute! I agree with the poster who said to soften it up and turn it down a little, and then it will be perfect. At the current volume it makes me think of a typewriter typing x-es moreso than a firing squad.
ReplyDeleteHah...cute!
ReplyDeleteWell I am laughing and I like the idea maybe something not so harsh sounding maybe like a pin prick..... just an idea.
ReplyDeleteElise
My 7 year old son thought it was great ...so did I!
ReplyDeleteMargie
I like it although I have to agree if it were a little bit softer it would be even better....like the sound of the sewing machine. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is funny, but nice funny, made me smile. Especially after your intro to your intro :)
ReplyDeleteHello! Have just discovered your blog and I love it and love your style! I look forward to reading more... and your intro made me laugh! Skevoulla :)
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeleteWell it does sound a bit like an embroidery machine that is making the hoop slap the machine.. The sound that needs recorded is that cute little sound you hear when you pull thread thru a piece of fabric that is hooped tightly.
ReplyDeleteThat's Nicolas!
ReplyDeleteI think it's really funny, I love it and it put a smile on my face!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteI think of your embroidery as a fun, modern version of a time-honored craft and I'm just not sure this represents that. Everything you produce is so creative and unique, I just think this might come off as a little hokey. Sorry :(
ReplyDeleteOn a more positive note, I can't wait for your needleworks to come out!!! I plan to buy all four!
Amy
ohgoodness. totally fun! of course, as a mom of 5 sons i totally get the teenagery goodness...
ReplyDeleteIt's cute, it's cute! Gosh, my brother used to play drums when he was a kid. (Maybe they all did)
ReplyDeleteit's a kid with drums! big ol' sewing machine sound!
ReplyDeleteYou are hand embroidering, right? It does sound a little more like a machine. and then the cymbal (or whatever the thing is at the end) is funny! Maybe some classical music,,with a more flowy feel would suit you. I don't know. I DO love that you allow him to work with you. I really admire that. I think we underestimate what our kids are capable of sometimes. What a great way to work on your relationship while you work on your work!
ReplyDeleteVery dynamic tempo! It does not sound like firing squad to my ears, anyway. Just wish I could sew by hand at that speed! Will your new product allow me to keep up with that tempo?
ReplyDeleteLoved it!
Diane Côté
Very cute!
ReplyDeleteMade me chuckle and smile.
Sounds like a drumroll...
Hhahaha! Made me laugh and woke up my baby! He is gorgeous for helping out! Love it. I would buy regardless. Make that, I WILL buy, regardless. xo
ReplyDeleteIt's late, so it kinda scared me but it made me laugh that it scared me.... Hmmm, I think I'm just tired.
ReplyDeleteThat was awesome! You should keep it!!!
ReplyDeletei think its great! :)
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, not so keen, sounds like it's from a mini Casio!
ReplyDeleteI liked it so much, I played it again but the 2nd time I turned volumn down a bit & it was oh so much better!
ReplyDelete13 year old boys and working at home is the best! They do have a way of keeping it anything but hoe-hum.
ReplyDeleteI liked the first six or so beats and then it got too much. But I did like the little drum roll at the end, with the wavy needle!
ReplyDeleteOkay.....I probably wouldn't have laughed if I hadn't read your post. But, I did read your post, and as I clicked play, I couldn't contain the laughter.
ReplyDeleteI do love the animation!
- Samya
:D
ReplyDeleteThe end bit with the needle moving and the sound, is sure like a sewing machine. I love the originality!
and it did poke..nudgingly! :)
ReplyDelete:-S
ReplyDeleteBoys and drums--a centuries old tradition--just like embroidery.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me laugh, esp. since I know it is your 13 yr. old son. Looking forward to the final product--and the embroidery threads!
I love the sewing machine rhythm but the sound is gun fire-ish.... maybe the same rhythm with a different sound? What if the needle took the last stitch instead of the back and forth? I have to say I love the image and the sounds though... maybe just a few tweeks would do it... Have fun!!
ReplyDeleteI love it! So cute!!!!
ReplyDeleteI was waiting for the needle to blast off with that classic Roadrunner "P-choo!" sound! I agree a sewing machine stitch sound would be better than the drums! Can't wait for those beautiful flosses!
ReplyDeleteShooting, but still cute. ;-)
ReplyDeleteYes guns in the beginning but I love the end bit and the graphics are cute!
ReplyDeleteI love all your stuff so much, but as an animator it just doesn't jive with me. Just to throw out some completely unsolicited suggestions - I'd love to see the needle makes it's way around the logo clockwise leaving the trail of stitches behind and the swooping into it's final position, with the needle works underneath. And probably with less machine guns. :O)
ReplyDeleteAgain sorry for the random suggestion, I can't help it, I animate things.
First listen: thought it hilarious. Second listen: thought "why does needlework done by hand sound like a sewing machine?"
ReplyDeleteThird listen: now it sounds like a machine gun.
Love the graphic and the creative process, especially that you involved your son. I hope that your post was imploring us to give opinions, if not, sorry.
Maybe you could go the opposite direction in terms of sound and record the sound of a wind chime, with its random pattern of sound and have the stitches appear whenever it chimed. Maybe starting at the top, appearing in pairs so it wouldn't drag out, working their way down the opposite sides and meeting back in the middle at the bottom, where the needle shows up.
Have fun completing your project. Oh, and "Hooray"
Love the graphic... the drum is a little more 'machine' than 'by hand'... but lucky you to have such a gifted and willing collaborator!
ReplyDeleteWow, I was reading the other comments and see that "Natalie" also had the wind chime idea--funny!
ReplyDeleteJust makes me think of a cup of tea and an embroidery hoop on my lap sitting on a screened porch...
I think it is a great introduction! It did remind me of a sewing machine. Question, the quilted pillow that you embroidered 2 posts below, - love it! Which of your fabrics did you use for this? Why not sell this as a kit? Too cute! I am making your felt circle garland as my summer on the go project. :)

ReplyDeleteFunny and awesome! Keep it.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that this was done with your thirteen year old son makes it all the more perfect! We all enjoy our window into how you mix being an artist, business owner, and mother. But it's the way you embrace and honor the "mother" aspect of your life that most inspires us all.
ReplyDeleteJill (artist, business owner, and mother of Tallulah Rose)
so I just played the video and my husband looks over at me from the living room and goes, "come on, come on! Move it, Move it! Feel the vibrations!. Me staring at him weirdly he says, "doesn't it sound like Good Vibrations?" hahaha! I suppose it does. I like it though.
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!!
ReplyDeleteFor me, the stabbing needle and drums are just a little more violent than I think of your brand Anna. But I LOVE the passion and I hope he keeps it up!
ReplyDeleteI thought it sounded like tap dancing for some reason, kinda big band, I like it!
ReplyDeletei think its great!....it gave me a chuckle.
ReplyDeletehooray!!
ReplyDeleteOne more vote for firing squad. (But it did make me chuckle.)
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, I think it's a great graphical element. I think adding animation and sound actually detracts from it.
Hilarious. I was bobbing my head to the beat to hard to stitch anything, but it sure makes an impact.
ReplyDeleteIt's attention getting. My suggestion would be to change the sound up for the straight stitches just to add a break from the drum.
ReplyDeleteGosh, it does sound a little like a machine gun firing, it's very ......... well, it's 'punchy'! I'm so looking forward to the launch of your new patterns, and the new belt, with the cross stitch, is just fabulous! Vanessa x
ReplyDeleteWe did a power point with a cartoon typist at work with typewriter sounds-very similar and 2 years later I still love it. I like yours too and how the sounds match the image as it occurs.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the lacemaker video a great deal-thank you for sharing it. In one of the comments a lady wrote about how important the handmaker is-who she made the item for. (Sorry for the poor grammar) While I love handmade for me-I treasure many old handmade items found at flea markets, estate sales and wherever I can find those I can afford. I don't need to know the maker to value the work. Just my feelings on the topic.

ReplyDeleteAwww...I thought it was awesome. I read all the comments before actually seeing/hearing the video because the video wouldn't play on my iPad. Now that I've seen it, I see what everyone's talking about but I love it!
ReplyDeleteThe needle going back and forth reminds me of a dancer's cane. It's great.
Don't overthink it. Art is about personal expression...and this is yours (or at least your sons).
ReplyDeleteIf you feel comfortable with it as part of your brand...go with it.
In no way is it offensive, just different.
I watched it twice, mostly because the first time I watched it I was immediately scrambling for the volume control =) I think the animation is cute, and even with my volume up way too high, I still laughed afterwards!
ReplyDeleteI'm late commenting on this, but as a mother of a 13 year old boy, I laughted so hard that I was crying, and more so after reading some of the comments. The intro is wonderful, and more so for the connection between you and your son that is behind it.
ReplyDeleteI thought someone was shooting at me. Maybe a toned down sound and a different tone when you get to the dashes around the corner of the oval might be fun. The needle action is great. How great that you get your son to help on this project.
