In the White Room

white.room

It is getting pretty exciting up there in the attic/studio. Still don't know what to call this room. We already have a room called "studio" and saying something like "upper studio" sounds, uhh, kinda lame. Any ideas? I have a feeling we might just call it "upstairs" since this is really the only room we have that is up.

I have never paid anyone to paint for me in my whole entire life. But my builders have this groovy airless sprayer and they can cover the whole room in about 90min. There are so many, many nooks and crannies and shelves and drawers and trims and such that it would really take me an entire day to give the room one coat. So I decided to give in this time.

The color is called "Glass of Milk" and its one of Martha's colors for Home Depot. Have you guys used her cute little color swatch cards? They are a nice large swatch, and a narrow strip of the top and bottom both fold over the main color to reveal a color suggestion for ceiling and trim. Its really quite helpful and made me want to build a dollhouse out of them. Thanks girl. I'm using all the same color for walls and ceiling, just changing from eggshell to semi-gloss when it goes from drywall to wood. But I am taking Martha's (or some smart color person that works with Martha) suggestion for trim, but using it for the floor. It's called Macadamia Nut. Darker white, but still clean and nutty.

Phew. I think I will be moving in by the end of the week!!! I can hardly wait. In the grand scheme of things 6weeks isn't that long, but it feels like forever since we started.

More details and photos to come! xo, AM

  1. It looks like a dream! My hubby jokes that if he dies I'll have everything in the house painted white within a month. He's not totally right, there'd be bright accents too ;)

  2. it's going to look sooooooooooooo fabulous :) can't wait to see the final photographs :)

  3. From the dust and noise, I have to say: It's gone by in a flash!
    It really does look amazing.
    Art Loft
    The Space
    Creative Corner
    The Nest
    Quilter's Nest
    Art Nest
    Headquarters
    Sanctuary...
    Something will come to you...

  4. Gee... it was meant to say "far from the dust and noise..."
    lol

    ReplyDelete
  5. Wow, how can you not look at that and get excited!

    ReplyDelete
  6. I drove by your house last weekend on the way to my in-laws and saw your new window where the hole used to be. Yay for the space being almost done!

I'm partial to upstairs. We call the room two steps down at our house, the downstairs, which is kind of silly but easy.

    ReplyDelete
  7. How about The Attic?

When we were working really hard on something as children, my mother woulds say we were working the cobwebs out of our attic.

It is beautiful and definitely no cobwebs.

  8. That is looking very nice. It already has that dreamy studio look. Can't wait to see the finished room.

  9. So lovely! I've always been partial to calling my (imaginary) space a "lof"t, as it sounds so bohemian and arty. But of course, there is the lovely princess romantic view of calling it "my tower" with beautiful light and lovely clothes to spin around in

  10. Ha I just bought "Glass of Milk" to paint all of the trim in my house. I love Martha's colors, you can't go wrong with them. We just painted my daughter's room "sunken pool" and it is the perfect aqua, especially with the milk white trim. Her desperately in need of painting dresser will be done in "ladybug red"

I love the new upstairs! Can't wait to see it finished.

  11. Oh I say call it the 'Milky Way' ... if you do though ... don't blame me if you can't help it when you eat chocolate up there ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh my goodness, this is so incredibly lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I imagine you ARE excited! We're all excited out here too!

    ReplyDelete
  14. You know, It reminds me of clouds. You can tell people you're spending the afternoon up in the clouds with sincerity! Ha That's cheesy, but oh well.

    ReplyDelete
  15. What a wonderful space. Light, airy and great for creativity to explode!

    ReplyDelete
  16. literally jealous. I'm just beginning in the world of quilting, but truly would love to have my own room one day. Can't wait to see the move in photos.

    ReplyDelete
  17. More like a "peak" of inspiration!

    ReplyDelete
  18. gosh gosh it looks gorgeous! I'm on the same wavelength as Adrienne, I'm thinking Milky Way. With milk and nuts I start thinking about chocolate, cookies and desserts. Or how about My Sweet Parlor? heheh

    ReplyDelete
  19. What's wrong with Upper Studio? Sounds just right to me.

Kyle's suggestion of The Loft is pretty good too, with its quilty connotation.

    The Annexe?

    ReplyDelete
  20. the Aviary, The Aeire

    ReplyDelete
  21. Love it. I have a gallon of both of those colors in my basement - I use the white for just about everything and I have a bedroom painted in Macadamia nut. It all looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Looks like at art installation right now!

I think you got into my dream - that is my "Dream Studio". I would call it "The Loff". Can't wait to see it stocked to the ceiling with color. Love it!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am so excited for you Anna! You are going to love that "upper studio". I do, and I haven't even seen the finished product! Is this the official new studio, or is it just and additional studio? You might should rename your other room. Maybe that would be easier? sorry I'm not much help!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Pretty. I'm Loft Creations because I started my business in the loft off the upstairs master bedroom. How exciting to have a lovely space such as this.

    ReplyDelete
  26. How about these names?
    The Lookout
    Castle in the Clouds
    Inspiration Loft
    Creative Sanctum
    Needle Haven

    ReplyDelete
  27. ha! Creative Sanctum is great, Apey Lee's Homespun Designs!

    ReplyDelete
  28. LOVE the space! The Loft or The Treehouse come to mind for names for the "space"

We just had a painting project of our own this past week. See it here: http://www.mamalotus.com/2011/03/polka-dotted-room.html

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm looking forward to seeing it filled to the brim with your fabrics and other creative supplies. That'll be a sight to see!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Beautiful! So cool to see how this is taking shape! Can't wait to see how you dress it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Love how you used the low eaves for built-in storage! Perfect! Mmm, and the wood ceilings - right on.

    Loving watching this come together!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Also, I'm a little tempted to call it the Crow's Nest. Like in a boat or an apartment in Europe - it's the highest place in the house.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I like the suggestions that others have made about calling it the loft or the tower. I'm so jealous---it looks absolutely fantastic and it's not even done yet!

    ReplyDelete
  34. What if you called in the Annex?
I always thought that sounded worldly.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Laura Ashley beat me to my answer... I'd call it the Annex. We had a fine arts building on my college campus that was called just that: Fine Arts Building. Booooooring... but when we had classes in the Art Annex, it was so much more interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  36. I can already tell it's going to be amazing. Loving the photos - and your excitement. Can't wait to see more. :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. When I was growing up we added a room on our house (a den). Forever it was called....

    "The New Room"

    original, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Trying very hard not to be insanely jealous. It looks amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  39. So excited for you, I have been embroidering too and Balthazar is a favorite of mine too! I knew I liked you!

    ReplyDelete
  40. What about simply Upstudio?

    ReplyDelete
  41. That room is looking so good!!! I wish I had a huge space like that *sigh* I'll just have to make due with my mini craft room :) speaking of which I made your I'll have one of everything bag! Love it! Posted about it today :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Love all the white and with your wonderful fabric in there - YUM!!! I think I would probably end up calling it the craft loft or art loft - I have 2 studios also - one inside that I call the studio and then when it gets nicer out we have a nice out building which we end up calling the shed.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I vote for "The Upper Room", hahaha. Its beautiful! I cant wait to see it all completed. Gives me inspiration for the 3rd floor(attic) in our home some day.
    XO,
    Sarah

  44. It's totally cool up there. And yeah, 6 weeks. I guess you had professionals, b/c that is quick. I have a list of house projects for my dh and it has about 2 years of dust on it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  45. 6 weeks is darn impressive! What an AMAZING space! I have dreams of an atiic turned studio blanketed in white:) I can't wait to see what this space inspires in you!

    ReplyDelete
  46. That is so EXCITING that you get to move in next week! I can't wait to see it when you've filled it up with your fabric and lots of colour...

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love it!

How about calling the room the sewing lab? In college, I used to spend time at the art lab doing my projects so I have a fondness for that word.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thanks so much for sharing the process. I have 600 sq feet of attic space and have plans to finish it and I am loving your many ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think you should call it "The Salon" and say it with a very formal accent. hahaha It is beautiful, I'm sure there will be many happy memories made here!

    ReplyDelete
  50. I love having specific names for all the areas of the house, especially important with so many family members. I think The Loft, would be simplest, most straight forward and not silly.

    ReplyDelete
  51. What a transformation Anna. It looks amazing. I think you should call it the tree house - didn't you say you felt like you were in a tree house when there was a huge hole in the wall?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Looks like "sewing heaven" to me. Up high and wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  53. I can move in and you can call it "Jen's Room". Those built-ins are AMAZING!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Whatever you call it, it's gonna be great! And Glass of Milk is a great color. I've got the card taped up on the wall of my soap studio. Next time my Mr is in a painting mood I'll be all set!

    ReplyDelete
  55. The first word that came to mind is "sanctuary"...what an absolutely beautiful space, no matter what you end up calling it :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. The tree house! After all you'll be in the tree tops and wow! What a fab space...so much potential, I'm not sure if it's humanly possible for you to get any more productive -or- creative, but I cannot wait to see how the space unfolds! BTW...my 11 year old completed her first sewing project made the free skirt pattern of yours (with 4 rows of elastic) she loves it and is so proud! Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  57. So exciting it makes me want to redecorate my studio. How about the loft it has that arty vibe and it's upstairs.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You could call it "The Loft". Enjoy your new space.

    ReplyDelete
  59. i would call it belle blanca

  60. K. Gale10:31 PM

Very nice! What about the "Alcove" or "Grotto"?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Reading through the rest of the comments, I am partial to options "the attic" and "the crow's nest." From my perspective, it seems like it did come together so quickly! I know how projects seem to go ON and ON and ON when you are in the middle of them, though! I can't wait to see it, once you have it filled with all your beautiful fabrics! So exciting. Enjoy!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Okay, I completely jumped up and down when I saw "Glass of Milk", because that's the same color I painted MY sewing room! It's such an awesome color because it gives warmth to the room without competing with fabric/colors/patterns, etc. I can't wait to see how your room looks all finished and studio-y. :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Love the space. Can't wait to see it once you've moved in. Question: How high is the pitch of your roof (ie how high is the ceiling at the tallest point in the middle). I'm trying to work out whether our roof cavity would be ample to do same. I would end up calling it the studio or the loft.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Sooo much storage, It must be hard to be patient. We have Porters paint over here and I could spend all day in that shop - Its fantastic

I call it Paradise. All that space and storage. Lovely!

    ReplyDelete
  67. Jo of "Little Women" fame did all her best thinking in the "garret", which is just a fancy way of saying attic. My guess is you're going to call it "MY ROOM!" And we will all be jealous. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Another vote for "Nest!" Our master bedroom is the only room on the 3rd floor of our house, and we've taken to calling it the "Upper Nest." So cozy.

    ReplyDelete
  69. You are so lucky to have a dedicated sewing/craft space!! I have a 3x10' alley carved out behind our bed by placing the bed in the middle of the room and hanging a curtain behind it.

How about the "milkhouse" referring to your paint color for a room name? Nice and farmy. :)

  71. How about the little white attic, like Fanny Price's room in Mansfield Park? :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. why don't you call it the milk room? reading your color choices made me want a tahoe cookie and glass of milk. those are the ones with the macadamias, right?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Love it!!!!! Leaving it white will make your colors just pop!!!
OK I like the name: "Anna's Attic"
    Mechelle

I think I would call it "heaven"! In the dictionary, the informal definition of 'heaven" is: a place, state or experience of supreme bliss!

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think you should call it "L'Atelier" (studio in French.)

And I am so glad you pointed out this color. I am painting some walls white this weekend and wanted the perfect warm, creamy, but still white white. I'm sure Martha has some great ones!!!

Looks so spacious! I call my little crafty space in our attic "lofty aspirations" Barb

    ReplyDelete
  77. So nice to have all of the built-ins! Perhaps you could call it "A-loft"? It looks so airy. How exciting!

    ReplyDelete
  78. I would call that gorgeous space the cloud. High up in the sky, amidst the trees and birds in all its peaceful whiteness... definitely the cloud.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It is wonderful!
Why not call it Craft Attic?

    ReplyDelete
  80. I think you should definitely give it a name. It is too amazing to just be called "upstairs". This is such an amazing and dreamy space. Enjoy!

  84. Hello AM,
I have been reading your blog for sometime now...never introduced myself...I'm Sophie ( from Montreal)... love your addict....it reminds me of a few nice places I have in memory...Anyway, in French you could call it "atelier d'en haut" which translate to, you may know this already, upstairs studio. What ever the name...it will be incredible!
Unfortunately for moi, my husband says he won't do it!...oh well...I might just have to do it myself then...

    ReplyDelete
  85. Ha! Ha!...I wrote addict...by the sounds of it...it could be 'art addict' or art addict's attic....Dr Seuss style...

    ReplyDelete
  91. How about the "Upper Room"

    ReplyDelete
  92. We have two living rooms (one is really a family room). We've lived here for 14 years and somehow we still call them the "big living room" and the "red living room." Makes me laugh to type it out! Upper studio works for me...
