Punk Rock Love

punk.rock.love

Today I'm on my hands and knees (by gosh) finishing up the Love Emblem Throw. This'll be a free downloable pattern available to you soon. I designed it to feature the home dec and velveteen fabrics from Innocent Crush which are due in a few weeks. Oh- I finally have a flickr group posted for IC. Man, you guys are fast, already lots of inspiration there. Anyhoo, the quilt here was inspired by punk rock, my son's skateboarding ways, Frida Kahlo and did I say punk rock? Oh, yes I did. British-y. Union Jack. You get it, right?

basting

And on that punk note (a shrill, anti-social note?), you could pin a few of these through your ears, nose or eyebrows if there are some to spare after basting.

I probably shouldn't have blogged today.

In other news, there are what sounds like 704 squirrels in my attic that are scratching around above my head in the studio. I just cleaned out and organized up there a few weeks ago, looking forward to perhaps finishing some of the space in the next few months. Its as though they were waiting for me to do this, because they didn't like the mess. Now that everything is in its place they find it suitable enough to make a home there. Anyone know how to deter these critters from your nooks and crannies? You know, humanely? I will admit that my definition of humane may broaden after a few more weeks of the mayhem up there.

Nkay, I'm gonna dig up some Smiths. I know, its post-punk, closenuff.

Love the punk rock love going on!!!

A couple of way to be nice to your new squirrel friends is
1. trap the squirrels by putting a trap right up against the place they are coming in and out of
2. put a one way door - since squirrels usually go in and out several times a day - once they go out they can't come back in

Unfortunately squirrels have a great memory and if released too close to your house they will just get right back in ... also they leave a sent for other squirrels so a whole new family might move in.
We had to hire a professional - we found it was the easiest way. The professional was able to descent the attic and show us where they were coming in.

Hope this helps - goodluck :)

Last year a squirrel moved into my garage ceiling. I even tried a professional wild animal remover to get rid of him.

NOTHING....I mean NOTHING could rout him out, until my son brought home a bottle of Deer Off repellent spray. (bought at a big box hardware store) I sprayed all the areas where I thought the squirrel went in and out...he packed up and moved out in 24 hours time.

The spray isn't toxic, it just smells like vinegar. This summer I used it outside around my flower boxes that the squirrels would dig up over and over again looking for silly nuts I suppose. It worked on them too. You only smell the scent for a few seconds, but I guess it lingers and the squirrels are repelled by it. Whatever the explanation...hallelujah...they've moved onto to torture someone else....I hope it wasn't you!

Wow, Anna! This is exactly the direction your collection runs towards in my mind. Dare I say I think it's pretty different than your previous looks. I sense an 80's love.

Anna, We had to hire a professional too (the Moleman, so not kidding). He set traps on our roof and said he would let them go in the woods near his house (about 30 miles from ours). Frankly, I wouldn't have cared if he strung up the one squirrel that he caught and strung it up for all his friends to see. He plugged the holes and the next year we got a new roof (not because of the squirrels). I've got no good feelings about squirrels, they're just big rats with tails.

Emily Elizabeth said...

Wow wow wow! It's awesome how this collection can look so many different ways depending on how you piece everything together. Looking forward to that pattern!

I was actually chased by a squirrel yesterday as I jogged through the neighborhood. It scared me so badly I had to recount the story (with full squirrel impersonation) to my husband last night which now has become the source of, "Hey! Come look at your mom imitate a mad squirrel!" So sorry, no help there.

If you haven't checked out the soundtrack to "500 Days of Summer", do yourself a favor and grab it. A few British punk songs, some Regina Spector, Carla Bruni, etc. It's really, really great to create to.

Love the quilt, too!!!

When squirrels were continually digging up my daffodil bulbs, I buried a ziploc bag w/ a few mothballs in it, under an inch or so of the soil. While we can't smell the mothballs through the plastic, the animals can, and--allegedly--stay away. Might be worth a shot in your attic!

For more British rock try the "Rushmore" soundtrack. All British boy bands.

Lovin' this!!! And the Smiths - yes an old fav of mine. Whatev! ;)

I have also heard that putting down cayenne pepper all over helps. It' burns their feet enough that they don't want to walk on it again.
Can't wait to play with the new fabric!

jednoiglec said...

I love it! I just love it!

Kimberly said...

I've heard mothballs work to deter squirrels, too, but we tried it and they rolled them around the attic like they were playthings. We then put a screen over the hole they were going in and they couldn't get in anymore. It also sounds like the deer repellent, vinegar smelling solution works well. Good luck!

Melissa P said...

Punk, fabric and time to play. What else would you need? I think I've got the Louder than Bombs CD around here somewhere. Which is going to lead to pulling out Bauhaus and getting into a goth quilting mood. Thanks for the inspiration!

Susan said...

We hired a trapper and after the squirrel was trapped, they capped the roof vents so they couldn't get back in. After that, the squirrel was released. Good luck.

Susie said...

Very pretty (vacant).

I like squirrels and I feed them. It's their cute bushy tails. I know that makes me an idiot. They've probably got me on some squirrel sucker list. I think I'd feel differently if they actually came into the house though ;-).

Emma Thomsen said...

"Wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair!' Your quilt looks interesting! As I understand it the only way to get rid of squirrels is to trap them and take them away, then make the house squirrel proof. Make sure you clean up any squirrel 'smell' so other squirrels don't know it's a squirrel place to hang out. Hope this helps. :)

EmilyKate said...

I really can't wait till your patterns and the new fabric range are available here in Australia.... I have just started quilting and would love to try making the beautiful one you posted on September 10. I like the sculptural quality of it.

As to squirrel-deterrent, I am sorry I can offer no insight. Our home is overrun with possums in the roof and they are completely resistant to displacement. The fight eachother all the time. I can only think that once you start spending more time up in your attic space your squirrels will get scared away and move along to someobody elses place!

We had a raccoon living in our attic. Wan't so bad until we heard her GIVE BIRTH one night.

The animal control people literally put a dog cage on our roof with marshmellows inside. It worked. We didn't realize what animal control people did with the animals until I asked where he was going to release the mom and her 6 babies.

Save yourself $400+ and buy your own dog cage for the roof! Then you can actually release them in the woods (far far away)....

Great quilt! As for the squirrels, I would put mothballs in old pantyhose and leave them around in the attic-should keep them away-then seal up all those holes they are getting into before they nest and have babies in your attic! This worked when we had them in ours.........

Mickey said...

Oooooh LOVE the new design for the Innocent Crush line! Can't wait!!!!

thought/found said...

This quilt looks AMAZING! And it totally corresponds with the punk influences you were describing. I love it!

As far as the squirrels go, I think everyone else has already given you plenty of good advice, but I CAN commiserate. I must say, though, that the worst I ever dealt with were the resident mice when I was living in the East Village in NYC (speaking of punk...). There was no point in setting traps, since the holes in the apartment walls would just let more in. So I learned, grudgingly, to live symbiotically with them. But I couldn't wait to move. :)

I just love you for that
Beat-beat-beat-beat-beating
I don't love you for your tattered tie
I don't love you, and I don't know why
I just love you for that
Beat-beat-beat-beat-beating
I've got a safety pin stuck in my heart
For you, for you
I don't love you for your professed hate
I don't love you for your cards of fate
I just love you for that
Beat-beat-beat-beat-beating
I don't love you for your painted shoes
I don't love you for the friends you never choose
I just love you for that

I've got a safety pin stuck in my heart
For you, for you

First you have to find out where they are coming in. As I type this, I'm waiting for the pest control guy to come and collect some yucky dead rats that have been scratching away in my attic! EEW! Last time though, there were squirrels, and soon as the holes where plugged up, they were no longer coming in. Just the icky roof rats :(

claudia said...

Use Coyote Urine. You can get it at a hardware store. (It's syntetic...they don't use real urine. (Well, at least here in California)
The squirrels will think a critter higher up the food chain is going to get them.
Then patch up all the holes you can find where they were getting in. If they are chewing through small holes to get in put steel wool in those holes. They don't like chewing on metal. I wouldn't either, would you?

April (Polkadot Sparrow) said...

You could send a Jack Russell in. Not a trained fighter, but one more like my dog, who pretends to be extremely vicious but is actually scared of squirrels (don't tell the squirrels in our yard!). The dog will chase them away while putting on a good show. You could videotape it 1.) for your own entertainment and 2.) to play every few days up there to keep the message out.

I absolutely can't wait to see the finished quilt! Loving the English punk rock feel! Now, about those squirrels....we have them too, but they are in the trees in our front yard and threaten to attack you anytime you walk out the front door. lol Plus, I have to say.....I love The Smiths. Yep. I do. My iPod is full of their songs. I'm all alone in my love, because my husband hates Morrissey. sniff. sniff. ;-)

Good luck with the squirrels. Have a wonderful weekend! :)

My parents once had a raccoon in our attic. An older neighbor told them to just blare music all night long as loud as you could and keep the heat off (it was winter though) and they would be gone by morning. They didn't like the noise. I have no idea if it works for squirrels though.

We just spent the bucks getting our crawl space and attic cleaned out and sealed up after the squirrels had moved in..We helped them move out by live trapping and relocating them ourselves- peanut butter worked well. They really can cause a lot of damage! Good luck!!!!
