Sam & Sally said that you're, like, totally invited to my birthday party

sam.and.sally

And they know everything because they live on Eleni's thumbs.

About my birthday party: This Saturday July 31st, from 2:30-4:30, Textile Fabrics is hosting a book signing for my new book, Handmade Beginnings. When working with them to schedule the event, I scanned July, day after day, weekend after weekend, and realized that of course, there was nothing scheduled on the 31st. Why would there be? It's only my BIRTHDAY. (internal sigh.) But HEY. That's perfect. What better way to feel like a birthday girl than spend the day telling lots of people its my birthday. Now I know that you might already have your own plans of how you spend Anna Maria Horner Day, but if you could spare a few minutes, do come say hello. Let me sign your book. Let me give you cake. Let me kiss your babies. Let me sign your babies. Let me let you sing Happy Birthday to me. I am not excited. This is just part of my job. I do not like cake, but don't want my friends at Textile to feel bad, so I will probably eat most of it.

About Sam & Sally: Eleni sucks her thumb. Which I am cool with. She is not as cool with it as she used to be. I told her that her Aunt Eleni (my sis) used to suck her thumb when she was little too. And that at some point Aunt Eleni wanted to stop. It was at this point that my mom made her little thumb friends to wear to sleep. Aunt Eleni soon stopped sucking her thumb in her sleep. My little Eleni was very excited about the notion getting a pair of thumbsters to sleep with. And Saturday that little dream came true after cutting the thumbs off of some mismatched gloves and bringing Sam and Sally to life with a little embroidery thread. She said the boy should be kind of like a monster, and the girl should not really be like a monster, but a little bit monster-y with pretty hair. The wisdom of a six year old is astounding.

xo, Anna

That's the nicest thumb-sucking antidote I've ever heard of!

  2. Oh my goodness, I love this idea! My little boy sucks his thumb every night and his teeth are showing the effects.

I really want to come by and say hi on your birthday, but my husband has to work... the ONLY weekend this month that he has to work. So if I don't make it I'll see you at the Frist next month!

  3. What a great idea! Wish I could come wish you happy birthday in person and have my book signed (which I love), but unfortunately NC is quite far. So, happy birthday anyway. Hope it's wonderful!

  4. I used to suck my thumb, and my mother tried all kinds of things to stop me. But the dentist scared me one day with tales of dental surgery with braces to follow-and that was it. I used all my will power to quit. Puppets seem like a much nicer solution to the issue. Good Luck!

  5. July 31 is my twin boys' birthday, too. They will be three. Just an awesome day all around, huh? :)

Wish we lived closer so we could come. Sounds like fun! Happy Birthday!

  6. wow I will have to try that on my little one.. we keep threatening BRACES but she has a hard time stopping the thumb sucking.

  8. I love the idea! And I'd love to come to your soiree, but I'm a bit far from TN. :(

  9. OMG! It's my birthday, too! I will be camping. Does anyone know how to bake a birthday cake on a campfire?

    Happy Birthday to us!!

  10. Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant!

I'm so sad that I missed you in St. Paul at the Treadle book signing. I had RSVP'd to go and then promptly forgot about it. You're so lovely and inspiring it would have been fun to meet you and your sweet babe :)

  11. I would totally love to come to your party. Unfortunately, I'm in Indy.
Love the thumb covers. Great idea. I'll have to sock that away for later.

  12. That is the best idea to help a thumb sucker quit. I wish I would have known that when my thumb suckers were little.
Well...they quit anyway, but I think your way is less tramatic!

  13. Oh, now TERRIBLE to have to celebrate your birthday with so many people and with so much cake! What a DRAG! haha.
Love those thumb puppets. A perfect idea for if any of my kids ever are thumb suckers like I was.

Happy Birthday, Anna Marie. I would totally say this in person, but alas, I live nowhere near your book signings. I hope you have a wonderful day. -April

  15. Oh man, if I lived closer I would SO be there to celebrate Anna Maria day :( Instead, I will just eat a cupcake (or 5) in your honor ;)

I wonder if I could make thumb friends for each of my daughter's fingers? She chews her nails and it makes me crazy!

Those are so cute. I only wish I'd had some of those when I stopped sucking my thumb. I was about 6 also.

  16. Hey, July 31st is my birthday too! I'll be wishing you a very happy one from my far corner of this continent (WA state). Enjoy the cake and the book-signing.

  17. OMG, did I forget to say "Happy Birthday!" I know you'll have a great time. Enjoy!

P.S. Maybe I'll bring my copy of your book to the Frist center....

  18. Bellsandwhistles -- "reflector oven" . Check it out to see if you can find them at camping stores. ( Maybe they're not around any more; that was Girl Scouts some 40 years or so ago.) Not perfect baked goods, but not bad either. Ours was shiney aluminum. When you unfolded it and set it up, there was an angled "reflector" for the fire's heat to be reflected to the shelf below that held the food.

  19. Happy Birthday! Wish I could come, but whew, that would be a drive!

Bellsandwhistles: Try a dutch oven! We've baked cakes and cobblers on the campfire with great success!

  23. I say "Thumbs Up" to this post, both to your birthday because I am glad I am living when your fabrics are being created and to your daughter's new nighttime buddies because I wish my daughter had had those same buddies. Carolina

  24. First off those little thumb puppets are so cute. Second, happy birthday, and finally I wish I could attend the book signing, congratulations.

  25. What a wonderful idea: a thumb friend! I hate those nasty lotions you put on the thumb to keep your child from sucking it. Happy B-day!

  26. My five year old still sucks her thumb so we put mittens on her at night so she remembers not to. This is much more fun. I hope you have a happy birthday.

  30. Happy birthday!

Love those little thumb friends! Too cute! My daughter still sucks her finger, but I"m wondering how well one would go over with an eleven year old! She'd probably tell me I was nuts!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Great idea. My 6 year old also still sucks when really tired but feels self conscious about it. I don't mind, but that's way to make it fun!

  32. I have an almost 6 year old that is also trying to quit thumbsucking - I will have to try this. Let us know how it goes.

I wish you were coming to Memphis sometime!

  33. We accidentally got our 4 year old to stop sucking her thumb.

I was, quite ironically, preparing an article on knife skills for toddlers, when she cut her thumb helping me. We were really afraid of her sucking her thumb as it healed for fear that she would give herself an infection. This is where history helped us. She had a brutal infection from a bug bite last summer and she still remembers being on an IV. So we embellished a little, telling her that if she sucked her thumb while she had the cut she MIGHT end up with an IV again.

When we noticed her not sucking her thumb the next day we started plotting ways to make it look like her thumb was cut for longer, since it probably counts as abuse (wink wink) to do it on purpose. But the whole thing worked for her with that one tiny cut.

We may be bad parents, but you are far more creative and cute.

    Happy Birthday this weekend!

    Cheryl

  35. I have a little thumbsucker as well wavering between needing to but not wanting to suck that little thumb anymore...this is a perfectly adorable handmade solution! An early Happy Birthday to you and I do hope all your birthday wishes come true.

  36. Anna! Happy Birthday! I'm thrilled to know that you and my nearly decade old daughter Talia share the same birthday! My husbands' twin cousins were in Italy the day our daughter was born (also THEIR b-day) in a restaurant named Talia's. They had no idea we were thinking of naming her that. Pretty cool, huh? And Talia means bloom or blossoming in Greek, right? The world is connected with little strings of embroidery floss everywhere. Have a super-de-duper-dee celebration of YOU!

  37. Anna-

You are currently my favorite fabric designer and I'm so glad I found your blog! I have two, yes TWO babies and I can't wait to make some of the patterns in your "Handmade Beginnings" book.

Just a huge fan, stopping by to say hi!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Happy Birthday - wish I lived closer so I could help you with that cake dilemma!

I also need to say THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have 3 children and my oldest 2 never sucked their thumbs and used a pacifier which they stopped pretty early. My youngest is a thumb sucker, and even though he is young my husband and I were pondering on how we would nicely be able to help him with this habit in the future. Now that that question is solved we can work on more important questions like why do our children always wear mismatched socks?

  39. You are so creative. I'm thinking that some winter gloves (with the thumbs attached) decorated like this might be the thing for my little kiddos.

    ReplyDelete
  40. My son cut the fingers off his gloves (no, I have no idea why) and I've been planning to make finger puppets, for, well, a while now. I like the monster idea.

Happy Birthday for the 31st. If it makes you feel better, my husband forgot my birthday last week, so your plans sound better than my day was...

    ReplyDelete
  41. I love this idea. The world needs kinder, gentler thumbsucking deterrents. As a grown adult whose thumb still finds its way into my mouth, I might be looking into some adult sized thumb buddies.

    ReplyDelete
  42. oh goodness that is a good idea. My little one also sucks fingers...her right pointer and middle. It makes her nose a little longer, and I don't mind a bit. Besides, she is only 2 1/2. I wonder if there could be a pudgy (for two fingers of course) piggy (her favorite animal ever) buddy in her future.

And happy belated birthday...the 31st of July is also my son's birthday. It 'tis a glorious day I believe. :) Happy Birthday.
