Dear Dad, I made you lunch!

dads.lunch

Even though we're not together today, I thought I would make lunch for Jeff in your honor, so of course..... a tomato salad made the Dad way: fresh tomatoes (chopped in bite size pieces the way you like them, but sorry no one was patient enough for me to peel them first); chopped onion ; chopped cucumbers (the smell of which always reminds me of standing in the kitchen with you & a salt shaker, eating them fresh from the garden); Kalamata olives (the only kind of olives, as we know); a healthy dash of oregano; a heaping pour of the brightest, greenest olive oil (from your very own trees in Greece, naturally- I think we still have enough to get us through the year thanks to your winter oil visit); and plenty of salt (and even more when no one is looking, of course). Plus crusty bread and lots of people to help you eat it since you're not here. Thank you for teaching me the only way to make tomato salad and the only way to eat tomato salad (using the bread as a chewy, edible utensil).

I also decided that you would like some sardines straight out of the can with lemon, even though I could never personally manage to find that appetizing. I did however manage to find a very loving man to marry who happens to gobble this dish right up. He is a dream come true. (I can help with the cold beer, not a problem.)

I love you Dad! We're frying fish tonight and I'm about to start a blueberry pie......sure you don't want to take a little car ride west?

Happy Fathers Day! xoxo, chuffmuffin

This was great! My parents are from Italy and that is nearly the same way we make it! We puts lots of fresh basil instead of oregano. The juice from my father's tomatoes is my favorite. I could eat the whole loaf of my mom's bread with it (and usually do!) There's nothin' like it! Hope your dad takes that drive!

Smells like my home-country, Greece... I'm traveling back there this summer with my husband and little daughters and I'm looking fwd to some tasty salads and food made from my parents especially for us.
I'm sure my husband would appreciate the sardines, he's a big fan of salty fish! But because he can't have sardines every day he is content with a bowl of tomatoes, cucumber and feta cheese with oregano on top, and Kalamata olive oil of course!

My family is Lebanese and that is *almost* exactly how I eat my tomato salad. The only difference? Replace oregano with mint and add some fresh lemon juice, divine!!
But this one sounds really yummy too!

  29. I haven't been to visit in such a long time, I forgot what a delight it is to be in your space.

I loved your tribute to your dad.... what a beautiful way to do it.

Mmmm.... I do like sardines, but I know that takes an acquired taste!! My parents both enjoyed them, and now my hubby and I will have them once in a while for lunch.

  31. I have been following your blog for a few months, to be exact, since I decided to get back to sewing and started looking at fabrics.
When I saw pictures of sardines and salad my first thought was: "Oh, you probably visited some Russian party!" It's a Greek salad?! We make and eat it the same way - with precision of "and even more salt when nobody's looking" and bread instead of forks. Sardines - mmmm...
And so, somehow, I missed the fact that you are Greek Orthodox. It made me feel very cozy and fuzzy inside to know, that my favorite fabric designer shares my faith.
Thank you for all the beauty you create and for sharing details on your blog!
