Catching Up in no particular order: Prom

Kicking off the I-can't-believe-it category of events this spring was Juliana's Senior Prom. So many little details I didn't expect to fall over myself to photograph. The corsage was one of those details, but I love that photo and so glad we have it.

We had a blast shopping for her dress, just the two of us. Of all places, we decided to walk into the Jessica McClintock store which gave me such a nostalgic trip! I had several Gunne Sax formals (I'll bet you did too) until I started to make my own. It came down to deciding between this darling confection and an equally cute but slightly more sultry black corset dress. I told her that she had the rest of her life to wear a sultry black corset number but a limited amount of years to wear layers tulle. Surprisingly, she agreed.

She is so good at keeping her jewelry understated when she dresses up. She wore her favorite star studs that we gave her for Christmas last year. But she can't help herself when it comes to shoes. My feet hurt looking at that full shot of her with the shoes.

I adore the photo of everyone in the foyer waiting for her to come out. Waiting on a girl. The little girls were beside themselves with giddiness and wanted so much to be a part of every detail. They were right on her heels as she rushed around getting ready and whispering little giggly secrets to each other once Nathan arrived to pick her up. It's fun I imagine to see such a grown up girl get all dressed up like a real live princess in your own house when you're as little as they are. Must give you some reality to fuel your daydreams.

And then they went. And so did prom.
xoxo, Anna

  1. What a cute couple! She looks beautiful!

And yes, I had a Gunne Sax formal dress myself! My prom dress was white, and it had an asymetrical hemline, and was a slip dress with lace overlay on it, and had these cute little caplet sleeves. It was a bridesmaid dress and also came in pink. Prom for me was back in 2003! I still have the dress but I can't fit in it anymore due to two kids! I've kept it in the hopes of using it to create something someday with the lace.

  2. She looks beautiful! And killer shoes always make the outfit...I'm wearing red satin heels with a little platform and a red satin flower under my wedding dress, shoes always finish off the perfect package.

  3. Oh, and I should add I made my date wear tails, and my hair was super short so my aunt did my hair in a fingerwave.. we looked like we stepped back in time to the roaring 20's!

The highlight of the night was when we went bowling in our formal wear. I think they thought we got married because we were applauded when we walked into the bowling alley!

  4. What a gorgeous young lady, and dress and couple...and oh, it's all gorgeous. (Those shoes! Gah!!). Anna Maria, I am feeling weepy for you with all this growing up and moving out that's happening in your house. SO much wonderful beauty and growth and change. Love to you! xoxo

  5. Those pictures remind me of watching American teen movies and thinking how cool it must be to go to a prom, we had no such thing, although a number of high schools in the UK do now have them, so maybe my 3 girls (and 1 son) will have their turn one day..

  6. I love that she chose this dress. It's really true, this is such a prom dress, you can wear fancy dresses at other times, but this one just screams prom! And those shoes are HOT. My feet got a cramp looking at them too but I do LOVE them.

  7. Wow your daughter is so beautiful... of course we have seen her before but ... it is something special when they are all dressed up. I hope the guy appreciates what a beautiful date he had. I remember wearing Gunne Sax (they didn't look like that then) for 8th grade graduation then a couple years later when the patterns came out I made a burgundy one with all the rows of lace and satin ribbon on the front... one of my friends loved it so much I gave it to her and the shoes that went with it too.

  15. Wow - that made me really emotional, especially the first photo of everyone waiting..
My eldest daughter had her prom here in the UK and had an amazing night.
I can remember her dad & I watching the car take her off with both enormous pride and a huge lump in our throats; all the tugging to be independant from us seemed to be cemented in this night.
Of course its not so bad, she's still here with us, going to college and amazing us everyday
Im rambling, I love your blog, your posts and as a fellow mother of six you put me to shame in what you achieve daily!

  22. Oh my goodness. How did YOU do through all of that? I would be a mess (in a good way). I was just at my son's kindergarten graduation yesterday and I nearly fell over when the principal said he was in the class of 2022.

Your photos are priceless. Juliana is gorgeous. Those shoes...wow.

  23. Oh my, this made me tear up a little. She's so beautiful and it's such an occasion, isn't it?

Such a lovely record of a lovely event.

But man, I can't even bear the thought of preschool yet. You're a brave, brave woman. ;-)

  24. Girls were never THAT cool in 87 when I went to my senior prom! She looks lovely. I am so not ready for that! I love the image of the little girls all excited with her. Jessica McClintok has changed a lot since my day!

    ReplyDelete
  25. oh my, such a right of passage - for all of you! She looks stunning - she should thank you two every day for those great genes! And yes, I wore a Jessica McClintock Gunnysax to one of my proms, too! Not nearly as sexy, I can guarantee you!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh my gosh, she is so beautiful and the dress...just a perfect prom dress (isn't it nice she agreed..lol) The shoe left me speechless though..how do they do it! But the little girls, how cute are they standing with Dad dreaming of their time to come!

  27. She is a knock-out. What a fun time. Thankfully, I have a few years to go before my oldest gets gussied up for the prom.

  29. Gasp! Stunning photo record of an equally stunning young woman. Killer shoes, indeed.

  30. My daughter just had her first prom and we're just basically stunned at how mature and beautiful she looked. You must be beaming...gorgeous young woman, dress and dang, love those shoes!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I loved Gunnie Sax. I even made one myself for my 9th grade graduation!

She looks beautiful--such a fun dress. I have only boys, but that sure does look like fun to dress up your daughter for the prom!

    ReplyDelete
  32. A Bombshell! She is absolutely gorgeous. And the "waiting" photo, what a wonderful moment. I can only imagine how exciting it must have been for your little girls, living vicariously through their big sister. I love what you said about "reality fuel for your daydreams." My girly has about 15 years until prom, but she certainly has her princess dreams.

    ReplyDelete
  33. As a mom of a little girl and as someone who many days still thinks I am a teenager going to my own prom this made me cry...for the past and the future. Beautiful pictures...most especially the "waiting" one

    ReplyDelete
  34. That dress is amazing! I wish I was that cool when I was in highschool. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Wahhhhhh! The waiting photo is so wonderful and perfect and made me teary.

  36. Looks like an amazing evening! I love reading about the preparations and seeing everyone anxiously waiting for the girl. She looks stunning!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Your daughter is so pretty and your pictures captured the mood of the event perfectly,. And hear hear for Gunne Sax! We used to go to an outlet that we had at the time. Also, believe it or not I got my bridal gown at Jessica McClintock.

So beautiful.....and love the shoes! Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy your posts.

  40. Haha! My prom dress was (unexpectedly) a Jessica McClintock, too....a 3/4 sleeve, long ruched number. Oh yes, the ever popular ruche! I'm kind of glad I grew out of that trend. :-) I love Julianna's dress, though! It's so refreshingly unique (not your typical long formal), fun and girly with a little bit of sass...perfectly fitting for senior prom. Although I am not a mother, I can still sympathize with the emotions of a mother/daughter relationship that is evolving into a new stage of life. I have spent the past 5 years (after highschool) close to home with my husband and now we are leaving everything behind and moving to Texas! A challenging decision but one that is quite exhilarating. (Not to mention scary, confusing, and sad). Ahh, growing up...I guess it never stops. By the way, what are Julianna's post graduation plans?

  41. So beautiful! I think the best part of prom was the sparkly dress! :)

  42. Wow, model in the making!

  43. They're both adorable!
I'd wear those shoes if I could get away with it!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Oh, those shoes are so hot! You two did a fantastic job putting that outfit together.

I cannot believe how poised she is in all of the photos you post of her - she has the composure (at least on film) of a mature woman, with all of the delicate grace of a young girl her own age. What an envious combination!

  47. SO-o-o-o beautiful!

That photo of everyone waiting reminded me a post by Billy Coffey earlier this week where he talks about waiting for a girl because she's worth it. So worth it.

  48. These photos are absolutely beautiful. Your sweet girl looks so much like you! I can't believe I was looking at these with honest-to-goodness-real-live-salty tears sliding down my face! My own babies are growing so fast I can't keep up. I know I'm going to wake up tomorrow and my seven and nine year old babes will be going to prom, college and LIFE. It happens so fast. You are so sweet to share! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh my...this brought tears to my eyes imagining my now 7 year old getting ready for her senior prom. She is beautiful and I love that her dad isn't looking too happy in the waiting picture.

    ReplyDelete
  50. oh so totally cool. She looks amazing in that dress. and oh, those shoes, are to die for. And of course what a wonderful pictures.
My prom was an absolute, total disaster. I do love hearing of others who had just the right dress, just the right date, and a fabulous experience. :) thanks for sharing.

  51. Tell her another one loves the dress. My mom made me a dress VERY similiar to that my senior year. Love the shoes too. Babies grow up waaayyyy too fast.

  52. I'm 19 and i'd adore if juliana had her own blog! such great style x

    ReplyDelete
  53. Beautiful pics! I love the one in the foyer as well. I wonder if your DH, literally covered with small children, looked at this boy and wondered how it had all gone so fast since HE had been the boy in the tux...and if that boy looked at your husband and saw a glimpse of life in 20 or 25 years. The thought, as the mom of a boy almost old enough for prom, left a lump in my throat. How does the time go so fast?

  54. Hi from Norway. It's my first visit to your blog and it ended up costing me $85 in the most beautiful fabrics. Ahh bliss.

Just wanted to say thank you for such a inspirational blog and fabric collection.

Can't wait for it to get her so I can get started on the sleeping bag I'm making for my daughter.

Oh. and when I saw your work, first thing that entered my mind was this. http://www.oleana.no/ Norwegian knits and blankets very much in your style. I think.

  60. She looks absolutely stunning. And oh my gosh, her dress is almost identical to the dress I wore to prom... about 22 years ago! Gotta love the '80s revival that's going on these days. And you're right: there really are only so many years in which one can wear layers of tulle. :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Juliana looks gorgeous in the dress! It's true, you only have so many years left to wear tulle! XD I loooooove those shoes, oooh the bring me back to the clubbin' days!

What a gorgeous shot of the corsage! What camera are you using for all your beautiful shots? Is it really $$? XD I am looking into a nice interchangeable lens camera for, hopefully, under $1000!

    ReplyDelete
  62. That dress! The shoes!!!

The seniors in our small town all meet at the church next to our house to catch their limo-pool. My girls LOVE watching them. I'd say it inspires them to dress up, but just about everything inspires them. ;)

  65. I just have to say this: The other day my friend and I were discussing how jealous we are of you! You have lots of kids, you have the coolest career. Everything you design or make looks tres funky. You look beautiful. You've written books, and been on the Martha Stewart show! We have a running theory that you've sold your soul to the devil to obtail all your coolness! (kidding!) We, on the other hand, have lots of kids, little time for creativity. Lots of what we make comes out looking warped or not what we expected. Most days we can't get our kids to brush their hair. We almost never look stunning, just frumpy LOL. And if Martha Stewart ever came knocking on my door it'd be because she had a flat tire out front and needed a tow!

Congratulations to your beautiful girl on her graduation. I love her shoes. I am going to say a little prayer for her poor feet today too LOL :-P

  73. Your daughter is absolutely beautiful. Love her dress and those shoes ... they make the outfit, but my feet hurt just looking at them. My prom...almost 45 years ago, but I remember it as though it were yesterday.
