April Tuesday ~ home visit

sewing

~sewing~ something pour moi. I was entirely too jealous of this shirt that we got for Jeff while in NYC, and it reminded me of these fabrics that I bought in Portland last spring. And yes, I would say that one year is about the amount of time that it usually takes me to get around to making a blouse I have in mind. But I would not say that last year I expected it to be a maternity blouse.

leaning

~leaning~ against my studio wall is this old painted ladder that I've had my eye for a while to hang on to the growing collection of studio quilts. I guess that folk dance needs to come off that felt wall if I'm going to hand-quilt it.

lining

~lining~ the drawers of an old chest that we inherited from Jeff's Nani who passed a few months ago. A good cleaning with Murphy's oil and some pretty new lining paper (ala Target) will land this beauty into the girls' room for sharing. I had originally intended to keep it in the dining room to house all the handmade table linens that I planned to, well, hand make, but have yet to. I also had the thought to buy enough lining paper to match the repeat on it where it needed to be seamed. Neither of these thoughts is realistic or unusual for a person such as myself. Sigh.

sitting

~sitting~ in my living room is this new acquisition from my favorite local furniture store, which, sadly for me is closing its doors. I'm happy for Carissa though, as she has had her fourth baby and now completely following that path. If you're local, take advantage of the sale! I can't wait to nestle into that corner with a new nursing baby. That is, if Isabela's nose and whichever book she has it in will make room. (Pillows & rug ala anthropologie)

budding

~budding~ everywhere I look. Outside my window this sycamore (I think) has the most gorgeous shade of spring buds every year, and I keep telling myself this will be the stuff of some fabric print somewhere. One of these days.

waiting

~waiting~ for his (human) brothers and sisters to come home. Most of the time he sits with me in the studio, but I'm starting to notice he is more particular to the dark foyer on rainy days. We have a huge storm predicted and possible tornado watches for this afternoon. Maybe he's anxious for them to get here. Me too, boy.

thanks for coming , xo, Anna

  1. My husband and kids made a quilt ladder for me one mother's day many years ago...all hand done...whittled pegs, no screws, nails, or glue. My daughter even wrote a sentiment on the wood. One of my most treasured posessions.

  2. I was sewing like mad with my fourth pregnancy last year. I made a few fun and simple tops and maxi dresses. Now I'm breastfeeding, and want to wear more tunics, dresses as tops, and the like, but don't want to hoist the entire thing up to feed...any ideas on cute and classy breastfeeding options?! I thought the tiered ruffle look could be an option, but I'm not that skilled, really...

  10. My boyfriend works at Ben Sherman and I love their shirts! I especially love the little details, like the upside-down 'v' of the space right after the button on the short sleeve cuffs.

  11. I agree with Natalie. You open up your home with such thoughts as if we are all friends. I will bring the homemade brownies or maybe the chocolate and strawberry cheesecake.

O inspiring Anna and fans . . . thank you for your last post! Having just graduated from college a year ago, pregnant and enduring relentless stares, your sentiments and your readers comments are so heartwarming to me! To think that there will be a day when I nostalgically look back at the beginning of me/my son and warmly describe the way that we grew up together! Your blossoming creativity in the midst of motherhood is simply amazing. How do you have the emotional resources to mother and design/create, so beautifully, all at once?!

  22. OMG!! You were worrying about the repeat pattern on the paper IN YOUR DRAWERS??!! Oh, why do I feel like such a slob now? I love your patient dog, I have a 14 year old cat who follows me all over the apartment these days and I think it's because I had to leave her with one of my daughters for 3 months during my move. She now won't let me out of her sight. I love your blog and I hope you realize I'm joking about the drawer paper.

  25. I love visiting your home. A wonderful Spring post.
It's about time someone made some pretty liner.

I live just down the road from you and was getting blankets and pillows ready in case things got bad. (That almost sounds like I was getting ready to come to Your house if it got bad! Ha! No, I meant, getting ready to get in the central hallway of our home.) :~)
I love Spring, but I do not like tornado season.

  26. What is it about sewing and pregnancy? It took me until I was around 42 weeks to get the crib set up and the diapers out, but I had made new-baby appx. 1 million pairs of pants prior to his arrival.

  36. Hi craftmonkey- Carissa's was all 25% off a few weeks ago, so I would imagine it is even mroe reduced now that its APril, as I know that she has the lease through just mid-April, I think. Call and ask, they would be more than happy to tell you what % they are knocking off now and what they've got left.
    Hope this helps :)

  41. Hey Love the ladder!I have one like it I think. Do you you just have it leaning against the wall? Did you do anything special to the base or the top to keep it from falling over? Like cut an angle or something?

Hoping the children all made it home safe and sound and that it was only a storm, not a tornado...that sounds so scary!

  42. Your home looks cozy. I love the lined drawers. I might have to do that with the old desk I am using in my sewing room.

  49. mother of squirrel: its been a good year or more since I got the rug and then it was on sale. I stalked it for months waiting for it to go on sale and I'm pretty sure they sold out soon after that. Anyway, in case you can dig it up somewhere online, it was called the labyrinth rug.
