Squeezing a few things in ~or~ Squeezing into few things ~or~ Goody does Maternity

7mos

I love that I get personal emails requesting a shot of my belly. You might imagine that my belly looking like this is hardly a new thing around here. In fact I was talking to my sister the other day and complaining that I wouldn't see her before the baby is born most likely and how she won't see me pregnant. Which was promptly answered with "uhh, I've sorta seen that Anna." She said it in the most loving way. Brewing #6 hasn't bored everyone around here though, as Eleni and Isabella give this belly its very own hugs goodnight before bed. Oh my gosh, what was I posting about? Oh yea-there's been lots of questions that I want to answer for you about oilcloth, patterns and such so I'll try to squeeze 'em in here. That's were the squeeze thing came, from, now I remember. N'kay:

oilcloth: Is being rolled onto bolts as we speak which is fabric talk for the last thing that happens before it ships to stores. You'll have to check with your shops to ask if they're carrying it, as I'm not sure that every store who has my quilting cottons will also have these. Though I know they've been popular picks. We'll also have them listed in the shop in precut 2yd quantities as soon as they get here. They're 55" wide and I think will be retailing for 19$ or so a yard. AND GUESS WHAT? YOU DID IT! You banged your pots and pans & helped me get 3 MORE prints of Good Folks sent off to the mills for more oilcloth varieties! Yay you! It will take a little time to print and coat the wider goods, but you have this, this and this one to look forward too.

patterns: My first collection of four patterns is at the printers as we speak, erhh, as I type. You've seen 2 of them here and here, and there are two more that I will share this week and next. And by the end of the month, all the patterns should be shipping to stores. I will also have them in the shop, but perhaps first as kits with fabric. Our first priority is to get the patterns to all the shops, so if you're a retailer you can contact me about that, of course. We'll be updating the website within a week or so with a new wholesale page that will have all the ordering info. And whether you're a retailer, a customer, or my 3rd cousin twice removed, if you really want up to the minute news on all that, you can sign up on my mailing list where I make it a point to bug you about once a month. I try not to bug about business in this space too much, bc I prefer to bug only those who specifically ask to be bugged. Naturally I like to share what I'm working on every now and then if I'm all jazzed up about it, cause that's what I do, but, well you know. Could I elaborate on this more?

that dress in the Good Folks photos: Never have I rec'd such questions and gasps and in response~ thanks and so happy it makes you happy too! A version of this dress is in development for a sewing pattern to be released in early summer. And the zigzag quilt hanging on the wall behind her will be the free downloadable pattern for Good Folks. This'll be ready in another week or so, and the technique used in piecing the quilt is exactly what was used in piecing the dress for the most part. So making the quilt will get you all ready to make the dress.

Is that everything?

goody.does.maternity

My OB completey teased me and called me a teenager when she noticed my chic maternity jeans as we listened to the little peapod's heartbeat last week. She said all her teenage patients do this and I most definitely did this as a pregnant teenager. I guess some things you never outgrow. Oh well, clearly you do outgrow some things. But you know, some habits you never outgrow. I have nothing against maternity clothes, but as referenced in both photos, I mostly choose to halfzip, half-button, rubberband and recompose my favorite things as long as I can. I think I just have a harder time finding favorites in all the maternity things, save a few sets of pajamas.

This is going into that endless place. I will let you have a rest from me now.

Oh, no wait! Kim at TrueUp cared enough to ask me some questions about Good Folks and I hopefully answered with a little insight, so go here to read. Also, I have to tell you to go see Coraline in the theatre! My heart raced at the opening sequence with the gorgeous and incredibly satisfying up close views of a doll being cut, stitched, stuffed, etc. So lovely. Go see, go see. ALSO, I didn't think I could like Radiohead more, but their Grammy performance with the band kids was perhaps the best Grammy peformance I've ever seen. I only usually catch what I wanna catch, and skip a lot of it. And I just don't have anything to say about M.I.A.'s b&w ladybug that she stretched over her due to deliver a baby body, except more power to her. I hadn't thought of it.

have a great day! xoxo, Anna

  2. I love your belly shot, and I did the jeans to. In fact I had a loose fitting pair of levis 501's that I would fasten up with maternity elastic, you know the kind with button holes. I love the cathedral oilcloth! Thanks for sharing. Danielle

  3. I am totally with you on the maternity clothes thing. During my first pregnancy I didn't know all these cool tricks and sadly wore maternity clothes that I didn't like during most of my pregnancy.
This time I discovered the Bella Band, and I'm still fitting in almost all my regular clothes! Its more fun that way. :)
You look super cute, and congrats on #6!

  5. LOL I am doing the hairband through the jeans to hold mine up too! I am only 9 weeks though, I guess after 7 kids, the belly just automatically expands at the first hint of pregnancy hormones LOL I can't wait for the patterns to start coming out!

  6. Yay oilcloth! I see summer table cloths in my future! Maybe some smocks for the kids too! I sure do wish my belly looked that cute during my pregnancies. I just looked like a whale.

  8. I have been reading your blog for about a year.. but don't know if I've ever commented.. but I just have to say.. I thought I was the ONLY ONE who did this with my jeans when I was expecting!... in 1978, '80 and '81. Thanks so much for bringing back the memories!

i have been dying to see coraline ... i think it has something to do with the fact that i LOVED the name coraline but husband didn't. we settled on cora. which is absolutely perfect. now. but i still secretly love coraline.

  15. I gave up on finding comfortable fitting maternity clothes, I dont think they exist. I am 6.5 months along with my second and my wardrobe consists of yoga pants, basic long sleeved tees from Target (I think I have every color they have put on the shelf this year) and an array of denim shirts and dress it all up with a bit of funky jewelry.

  19. Ok so I don't want to seem like I'm not excited about the patterns and fabric.....because I am VERY excited....I flipped when I saw that bag! I'm just glad that there is someone else out there that thought the Radiohead performance was insane. You know those kids are the envy of Marching Bands all over the country! As for MIA...bless her heart for trying....I was waiting for her water to break right there on that stage!

  23. I love the belly photos, even though I don't have kids - very sweet! And it's fun to hear about your "clothing" adventures. (such as, did you ever wear yarn on the inside of a ring that was too big?!) Anyway, I am saving my Good Folks fabric for that zig-zag quilt and Dress - yay!

  24. Wonderful belly photo and sweet sweet post. I am excited for you! Our youngest are turning eleven soon and we are making our last Valentine party boxes this week as the girls are thinking about no more class parties and no more recess - middle school next year! I have to admit that watching my youngest two cross this bridge makes me mushy. ~Kelly

  29. I had hair bands on all my jeans for my two pregnancies (in my early twenties.) I wanted my old standards and was not comfortable in the maternity clothes. They worked well for afterwards as well.

For the twins (adopted) I was using safety pins. An unexpected extra week or two in a foreign country tends to be a bit stressfull, especially with your other children at home half-way around the world without you. By the time I flew home with the twins, I had lost an entire pants size but could not find size 16 talls in Hanoi. Go figure.

Love the new fabric line and can't wait to get my hands on some of the oil cloth!

  30. Hi, have just found your blog but loved your fabrics for a long time.
They are fun and fresh, I teach P&Q and live in Queensland Australia and have been thinking of making a few small quilts for the children down south who have lost everthing, will use funcky and fun fabrics to cheer them up,
All the best for you and your bub.

  31. I have just seen the picture of your jeans with a hairband to help fasten and laughed. I also did the same trick through all three of my pregnancies though I did get the idea from my mother in law who is a little bit portly (sorry). One friend said she use to cut the back out of her jeans but I could never be so reckless!! I guess the same methods are used all over the world.

    Thank you for the chuckle,

    Nina xx (in the UK)

  33. I'm 35 and having my first child in June... and while I didn't have any Goody elastics to loop through my buttons (short hair will do that), I did use rubber bands, snitched from my office, for as long as I could. I'm short, so wearing my regular clothes went out the window pretty fast!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh, my gosh, where to start?? I did the rubber band maternity thing with babies 1-3, and am hoping to give it another go if we get around to #4. Some things are too good to outgrow. Oilcloth makes my heart beat faster, faster, faster! And that Radiohead thing? Can you imagine being a band geek in Southern Cali and getting to play onstage at the Grammies with RADIOHEAD? I was breathless through the whole thing. WOW. Oh, and read your interview with Kim and found it very insightful--I now imagine you with a soft Greek accent when I read your blog.

  43. great belly shot and i think the hairtie for your "maternity" jeans is great! I am still riveted by Radiohead's performance on the Grammys as well----cannot get it out of my mind! I too think it's the best Grammmy performance I've ever seen and I'm really bummed they didn't win Best Album.

  47. I do love seeing that cute belly of yours A, but I gotta say I'm also quite excited about the forthcoming oil cloth! Our eating, art crafting, sitting and bugging mom before dinner chairs need some new fabric on the seats already (I just recovered them before Christmas) and I think one of your prints in oilcloth is exactly what they need.
