As I had mentioned last week, while at quilt market I was able to give a short talk about my new line and talk a little bit about the new generation of sewers and why are there so many more of us than there used to be. I paraphrased a lot of this article which makes such great (and funny) points about the addictive nature of sewing whether you're new to it or not. I also had some visual aids, of course, showing a range of projects for all different skill levels. I thought I would share a few of those with you.

I ofcourse showed both of the quilts. You've already seen some of the shots of Juliana in the taffy tunic, and above is Eleni wearing some fun no-sew party items. Her little crown was lots of fun to make and her wristlet doubles as a napkin ring. The wand she is holding started out as one flower in a potted bouquet of wands. And since my attendees were mostly fabric store owners, the point I was making is that it doesn't matter if people are quilting with the fabric or not, what matters is they want to use fabric for various projects. Many wouldn't even involve sewing.

But more importantly, what did I wear!? I could not pass up the opportunity to wear my Chocolate Lollipop skirt. People kept stopping me to see just how I put that thing together. Remember how it started? It was very fun to parade around in, I must say. I'm such a peacock.

So I got all cleaned up, smelled a little acidic and we sashayed into the Westminster cocktails and designers meeting like the professionals that we are.
Good times. xoxo, AM
OHhohh, fun times fer sure! LOVE THE SKIRT, Anna Maria!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It turned out fantastic! What top did you wear with it? Everything is soooo cute, here! Gotta get sewing now! ;) Love, Laurie ~
ReplyDeletethat skirt is the cutest thing ever! i wish i could see it in person - i am sure it looks even better.
ReplyDeletehaha the nail polish thing is tooo funny! The skirt is soooo cute! You're so inspiring with your ideas.
ReplyDeleteOh I know you guys had a blast! My friend Sandi (portabellopixie) said she LOVED meeting you and Heather! I live in Nashville too (well in Hendersonville but I used to live kinda near you when I was in Bellevue) Anyway...I just wanted to say Hi and I am just lovingggg your fabric! I was sooo excited to see you lived in Nashville!!!
ReplyDeleteWhile you are dechoxing I am slowly satisfying my sweet tooth. I just bought my first installment (of which I am sure there will be many) Chocolate Lollipop. The store owner asked why I was only buying 1/2 yards and I told her I was making an apron. She said, "What a great idea. I never think to make anything but quilts out of fabric."
ReplyDeleteMaybe she should have come to your little seminar (btw --- I'm in SLC so she probably was there) about using fabric for other stuff. :-)
But, it is beautiful and I really do love it. There was one bolt that I was looking for that she had already sold out of (only 3 days after being in her store). So, I thinks a congrats is in order.
Ok, I'm not laughing at you -- I'm laughing WITH you. Since I've done something very similar with nail polish, I empathize.
ReplyDeleteLove the skirt -- I can't believe quilt shop owners hadn't thought of using fabric as, well, fabric. Especially with all of the cute bag patterns and other items that I've seen in quilt stores...sheesh.
Ooops, I forgot to ask -- what did you use as the "stiff" layer in Eleni's crown and wand? I have a little princess who is about to have a birthday, and what is a b-day without a wand?
ReplyDeleteHi!-I used double-sided fusible interfacing. It wouldn't have to be fusible if you just wanted to run a straight stitch along the edges instead of fusing! Have fun :) xo,Anna
ReplyDeleteI love that skirt!!! Did you make it up on the spot or use a pattern? Would you share? I've been lurking around for a while, but I have to tell you that your creativity is an inspiration to me! Makes me want to sew and sew and sew. I live in Europe, so I don't think I can find a "chocolate lollipop" fix here, but I'm hoping to when I go home to Arizona for a few weeks in June. Or maybe your fabric isn't nationwide yet? Here's hoping it is! Anyway, please share how you made the skirt!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
~Mariah
That skirt is fabulous! Your creativity never ceases to amaze me!
ReplyDeleteThat skirt is TO DYE FOR! I LUV IT!!!!!!!!! You could charge big bucks for that baby. It's beautiful!

Oh my gosh that skirt!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never made a quilt in my life (why leave fabric like this on your bed when you can prance around in public with it??) so it's nice to know you are helping the fabric store owners to "expand their vision".
The skirt is beautiful, and I just saw your picture with Heather...and you sure seam to have had a LOT of FUN!!!
ReplyDeleteJust LOVE your fabrics...I gotta have some to make some bags, and stuff for my kids!!!
Lovely fabric! So much fun! Glad the market was fun and successful.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh- I cracked up reading about your nail polish escapades...and it's good to know there is hope for the people who love your fabric but don't sew!
ReplyDeleteAs a quilter I think my biggest problem is figuring out how to cut up the fabric without cutting it up! I just stumbled over here from Heather's place, and I'm so glad I did! It's such fun to read about y'all's big time professional type soirees. Thank you so much for sharing it with us all!
ReplyDeleteack! too funny.
ReplyDeleteand... you were so right on when you wrote: "...it doesn't matter if people are quilting with the fabric or not, what matters is they want to use fabric for various projects."
True, true!
That skirt is great but I'm really loving that little brown floral Chocolate Lollipop dress on the little princess. I'll take it when she's all done with it. :)

Love that skirt! Glad to know that you too have some less than perfectly coordinated moments. It happens to the best of us. :)
ReplyDeleteIs this what that looked like????? Love it Love you thanks for sharing your brilliance with me...Love, Jennifer
ReplyDeleteI have always been sewing even before sewing was cool! And being a bit rebellious when I was young, I never took home economics in school. I was the only girl in my small town high school class (early 70's)who didn't. I thought too highly of my skills to submit to a very legalistic teacher! I wasn't really all that good but had access to great teachers, my mother and grandmother.
ReplyDeleteI am very glad that young women are getting into sewing. I was helping some 5th grade girls recently with some simple sewing and challenged them that until maybe a generation or two ago ALL women sewed even queens and heiresses!
You are certailly doing a wonderful job to help popularize the craft with your beautiful and fun prints and the clothing and quilts you make!
